in conspiratorial fashion. âSince Iâve got shot of Sam the Scam, thereâs nothing Iâd like better than a little chat with someone like yourself.â
âSam the ââ
âAn arrogant braggart. Heâs made the odd programme for the Beeb. Theyâre all crap. Heâs also terribly mean. Heâd steal the worm from a blind hen.â
âWhat a despicable miser!â
âThatâs the word weâre looking for. He wants to buy this place. But heâs constantly cutting the price. My biggest fear is that heâll get to Nigel â thatâs my husband â and heâll be tempted by a very large sum of ready cash.â She looked at Rachel seriously. âWhat did you want to talk about, Rachel?â
âUh, well, I, I was looking for some . . . advice. I mean . . .â
âAdvice! Youâve come to the right place, havenât you? All the wisdom of the East just pours out of me.â
âWas it from China this wisdom came?â
âKyles Scalpay. Thatâs where my granny on my fatherâs side came from. âShanghaiâs Wifeâ she was known as. My grandfather was a river pilot in Shanghai once upon a time and he was the one who brought all this furniture home.â
âWell, I thought . . . I mean . . .â
âThat I had more than a drop of Chinese blood in me? No, though my skin is a tad yellow, but thereâs folk on Scott Road far darker than me. No, Iâm as Heilanâ as peat. Oh, I like to have the things my grandfathercollected round about me. The Tartan Pagoda is a kind of shrine to my granny.â
âOh, I get it.â
âBut what are you going to do about Murdo?â
âI donât know. Iâve given him an ultimatum: unless he comes up with money, Iâm off on the ferry this afternoon and Iâm leaving him here.â
âGood decision, Rachel. Thatâll keep him on his toes . . . that is, if heâs really fond of you.â She paused for a moment. âSo, whatâs all this talk of yours about money?â
âItâs . . . itâs to do with Murdo as well.â
âEverything seems to revolve around him.â
âYeah, it does, doesnât it?â
âNow,â Suki said, âshall I make up your bill?â
âAs the old guy from Barra said, âIâm in a quadrangleâ.â
âWonât you tell me?â
âI can pay for last nightâs lodgings and still have just enough to get home, or I can stay another night â with Murdo.â
âGive me both hands, Rachel.â Suki held Rachelâs hands lightly.
âWhat is it weâre doing?â Rachel said.
âLet us pray.â
Rachel rapidly took her hands away. âUh, I donât think so, if itâs all the same to you.â
âDonât be silly. Youâre not going to be praying to the Lord God Almighty. Youâre just going to be putting some questions to yourself.â
âNo,â Rachel said. âLook, I donât want to hurt your feelings. Itâs a matter of indifference to me what religion other people believe in, just so long as they donât try to put iron horseshoes on my feet.â
âYouâre not listening to me, Rachel.â Suki seized Rachelâs hands in her own once more. âAll Iâm trying to do is teach you how you can have a conversation between yourself and the Rachel thatâs deep inside you.â
âSo that I can talk to myself?â
âThatâs it,â Suki said. âSo that you can draw upon the huge amount of power and love you hold inside.â
âGod be round about me! If I start talking to myself in public, guys will be on the phone saying âCheck all mental hospitals for empty bedsâ!â
âHave you heard of yin and yang?â Suki said.
âNo. Iâd hazard a guess they had something to do with
