âYang is like fire. If the fire is too hot, youâll burn the cabbage. Yin is like water. If you have too much water in the pot, the cabbage will rot.â
Rachel stared at her in horror. âYouâve already turned my head into broth, lady.â
âDo you trust me enough to do as I tell you â with the result that youâll change your life forever?â
There was a short pause. Finally Rachel said, âOkay. What do I have to do?â
âFirstly, close your eyes.â
Rachel closed her eyes. âWhat now?â
âAllow your mind to drift with the wind . . . slowly, flowingly . . . just as the morning dew departs from the greensward at sunrise . . .â
âMmmm.â
âRepeat after me: Where would you have me go?â
âWhere would you have me go?â
After a brief pause, Suki spoke again. âWhat would you have me do?â
âWhat would you have me do?â
A second or two went by.
âWhat would you have me say, and to whom?â
âWhat would you have me say, and to whom?â
There was a long delay. Suki released her grip and looked expectantly at Rachel. âWell?â
âWell, what?â
âAre you going or are you staying?â
âIâll stay another night â if the roomâs still vacant.â
âYouâre more than welcome,â Suki said. âI wonât charge you for the room tonight. Just give me twelve pounds.â
âThank you. Thatâs terrific.â
âCome on, arenât you formal, young lady! You can be informal with me. Just call me Suki. Thatâs my correct name anyway . . . Suki Morrison.â Suki looked closely at Rachel. âWhat are you going to do about him?â
âThatâs up to him. If he gets the money . . .â
âWhatâll the pair of you do?â
âWell . . . I suppose weâll have a night of mad, passionate love.â
âI hope he makes it.â
âMe too,â Rachel said.
âNot for his sake, but for yours . . .â
âBut if he doesnât get what he owes me, and if he doesnât stay sober . . . well, heâll be sitting on the chair all night with his legs crossed.â
âIf itâs your destiny to sleep with him tonight, ask your heart what you ought to do.â Suki paused. âWhat size are you?â
âPardon?â
âWhat size do you take in clothes?â
âTen. Why?â
âCouldnât be better,â Suki said. âYouâll knock everybody out with the cheongsam.â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âWear the beautiful silk dress Iâve got for you and every man in the place will have the hots for you.â She paused. âIncluding Murdo.â
âWhat if heâs not seduced by the dress?â
âFind somebody who will be.â
âHey, Suki,â Rachel said, âIâm very fond of Murdo. I donât want anyone else.â
âIf you look nice for him, well, youâll be doing him a favour. Listen, I donât care if it works out between you and Murdo or not. Either youâll sleep with him or youâll not. All I want is to see you in that Chinese dress.â
âThen Iâll ask you just one question,â Rachel said.
âGo ahead.â
âWhy are you so keen on me putting on this dress?â
Suki brandished a statue of the boxer/Saviour. âLook, Iâm married to a dunderhead who doesnât know the difference between Frank Bruno and our Saviour. Amnât I entitled to a little romance?â
Both women broke into laughter.
âOkay,â Rachel said, âbut weâll have to be quick.â
âWhatâs your hurry?â
âI want to find out how Murdo got on.â
They parted. Suki went into the office. Rachel ran upstairs with her bags.
