too fast to stop and smell the roses,â he said.
âI should slow down sometimes,â Marianna said, not even sure what that meant. But it sounded good.
âHow about next weekend?â Luke said. âYou want to go out again?â
âItâll have to be in the afternoon,â she said.
â Love in the Afternoon ,â Luke said. âThatâs my momâs favorite movie. She cries every time. You ever seen it?â
Marianna shook her head.
âWe should rent it sometime,â Luke said. âBut not next Saturday. Iâm more up for whipping your ass at Ping-Pong. You want to come over and see if you can take me?â
âYouâre on, Perchik,â Marianna said eagerly. âBut let me warn you: I am killer at Ping-Pong. Be prepared to die.â
Luke laughed, covering his eyes and shaking his head. âOh, no. Donât tell me you can whip me at two sports.â
Marianna giggled to herself. The truth was, she was terrible at Ping-Pong. She could barely return the ball. But it was just too much fun, teasing Luke and making him think otherwise for a whole week.
âWeâll see,â she said, her eyes dancing. âWeâll just see.â
It took Heather twenty minutes to get to the theater to pick Marianna up, so by the time they were driving home it was almost dinnertime. Marianna was worried. She didnât want her dad grilling her about why she was gone so long.
On the other hand, she never wanted to get out of the car, because then sheâd have to stop talking about Luke.
âHeâs so amazing!â she gushed to Heather. âI canât believe I got this lucky.â
âThatâs cool,â Heather said.
Marianna just sat there, grinning. Sheâd been smiling so much, her face almost hurt. âIt was so romantic when he kissed me,â she told Heather. âIt was at the perfect moment. I couldnât help wondering if heâd planned it, you know? Right when King Kong was feeling all romantic about Jessica Lange. Heâs a great kisser, too.â
âWho isâKing Kong?â
âHa-ha. But seriously, Iâve never kissed anyone who had such great lips.â
âYou havenât kissed anyone since eighth grade!â Heather reminded her.
âDonât be so literal,â Marianna complained.
Okay, it was true. She hadnât kissed that many guys. Okay, only two. And both of them were in junior high. But so what? This was magical, and she intended to enjoy it. What was up with Heather, anyway? It was like she didnât seem to get, or really care, how wonderful Luke was.
Heather was obviously bored with the topic, too, because she changed the subject.
âSo do you want to hear the rumor thatâs going around about why Todd broke up with Lisa Marie?â Heather said.
âWhat?â Mariannaâs eyes opened wide. Heather didnât usually gossip, so this must be big.
âI heard from a reliable source that he dumped her so he could ask Delia Apfelbaum to the prom.â
âYouâre kidding!â Delia was a bit of a reach for Todd. âWho told you?â The question came out, out of habit, but Marianna knew it was pointless. Heather was very discreet. Like the perfect Washington diplomat, she never revealed her sources.
âItâs just what I heard,â Heather said.
âI wonder if Lisa Marie knows,â Marianna asked.
âIâm not sure, but anyway, it doesnât matter. The word is that Delia turned him down.â
âDuh.â
Well, this was an interesting development, Marianna thought, wondering how Lisa Marie was going to feel about the news.
Lisa Marie wasnât exactly the type to gloat over her exâs failures.
But then again, she wasnât exactly the type not to gloat, either.
