of them thinks itâs a real date.â
âUm-hm.â Graham went into the back room to refill the amaretto syrup.
As soon as he was gone, Lisa Marie took out a calculator that was under the counter. If she was going to meet four guys at the prom, sheâd better look fabulous. How long was it going to take her to save up enough for that dress?
She did the math quickly and sighed. Sheâd been working at Starbucks for three weeks now, and didnât have quite half the money. And the prom was only three weeks away.
âExcuse me,â a voice near the register said, clearing his throat for attention. âAm I wrong, or do you sell coffee here?â
Lisa Marie looked up and saw Liâl D standing there, giving her his best Iâm-hot-and-youâre-hot-so-what-are-we-waiting-for stare. His eyes were so deeply set, it was impossible not to be riveted by them.
âHi. What can I get you?â Lisa Marie asked brightly.
âMake it a tall mocha,â Liâl D said, staring at her intensely with his bad-boy grin. âIâve got a sweet tooth tonight.â
âOne tall mocha blended coffee.â Lisa Marie called it, just like she was supposed to. Only she didnât call it out loudly, since Graham wasnât there to hear. âItâll just be a sec.â
âHey, Iâm ready whenever you are,â he said in his low, sexy voice.
Lisa Marie laughed. Liâl D was so amazingâhe just radiated self-assurance without strutting around like an asshole.
Still, a girl had to keep her defenses up.
âIâm guessing youâre always ready,â she said.
Liâl D tilted his head at her. âHey, I can play by whatever rules you want to make,â he said, sounding totally sincere.
He eyed her with such an intense look, she immediately felt tongue-tied and didnât know what to say. She stepped behind the coffee machine and started pouring the chocolate for his mocha.
âSo whatâs this music?â Liâl D nodded up at the speakers mounted in the ceiling.
âJazz mix. Starbucksâs own blend,â Lisa Marie answered. âThe CDs are right there on the counter if you want to buy one.â
Liâl D shook his head with a slow, disapproving smile. âThey should stick to coffee.â
True, Lisa Marie thought. But as a loyal Starbucks partner, she wasnât allowed to say so.
She poured hot coffee into the chocolate milk and stirred. âSo is it true what everyone saysâthat youâre getting a contract to record a CD?â
âIt could happen,â Liâl D said with a slight shrug. Like he didnât want to count his chickens, but there was a definite possibility. âIâve been talking to some people. Weâre working on it.â
Heâs the perfect guy, she thought. He had all the things she wanted. He wasnât all macho and full of himselfâjust cool enough to get his message across with smack-down power. His music was loud/angry/in-your-face, but his personality was laid-back/sensitive/quiet. What could be better than a guy who was sexy and hot and on the edge, but at the same time seemed like heâd let someone in if it were the right personâthe right girl?
âYou want extra whip?â she asked him.
âNo whip,â he said. âI forgot to say.â
Lisa Marie heard him sort of humming while she finished making his drink. She wanted to look up, to see if he was watching her, but the espresso machine was so tall, she couldnât see over it.
Finally the coffee was ready. âOne tall mocha blended coffee,â she called, trying to make it sound like something sheâd created just for him.
Liâl Dâs eyes were laughing when he took it from her.
âSo do you have to stay back there the whole time youâre at work?â he asked.
âPretty much,â she said. âExcept when the tables need to be wiped or the milk and
