strongly his body reacted to her. He didnât want any sort of relationship with a woman. It was far too soon. The girls werenât ready. And he wasnât ready, either. * * * The following day Lara was strapping a patientâs ankle in the treatment room when Jane put her head round the door. âHave you seen Christian?â âNot since lunchtime.â Lara looked up. âWhy?â âBecause his daughter is in Reception, asking to see him.â âWhich one?â Jane stared at her. âHow many does he have? How do you suddenly know so much about his children?â âHe must have mentioned it,â Lara said casually. âIâll go and see to the daughter while you find Christian. Iâve finished here, anyway.â She handed the patient an information sheet. âKeep the leg up when youâre sitting down. You can take some ibuprofen or paracetamol for the pain.â She washed her hands thoroughly, wondering why one of Christianâs girls had suddenly arrived in the emergency department. âIs she on her own?â âAs far as I could see. I wonder if heâs gone down to the chief execâs office or something?â Jane slid out of the room to continue her hunt for Christian and Lara hurried through to Reception. Aggie sat there, looking forlorn. Her arm was bandaged and her face was covered in spots. âOh, my goodness, whatâs happened to you?!â Lara swiftly entered the code that unlocked the door through to Reception and hurried over to the little girl. âAggie. Do you remember me?â âYou look like that fairy. But without the wings.âAggie gave a faltering smile and Lara saw the remains of tears on her cheeks. âThatâs me. The fairy. My nameâs Lara. Whatâs happened? Are you ill? How long have you hadspots?â She peered a little closer at Aggieâs face and realised that, close up, the spots looked like nothing sheâd ever seen before. âErâ¦Aggie, about these spotsâ¦â âI need to see Daddy.â Her voice was a soft whisper and Lara nodded. âOf course you do. But tell me what happened. Why is your wrist bandaged?â She looked at the loose, saggy bandage and knew immediately who had done the bandaging. âDid you fall?â Aggie swung her legs. âNot exactly.â âAnd those spotsâ¦â Lara reached out a finger and rubbed at the spots. âAggie, why have you been painting spots on yourself?â âBecause I need to look ill,â Aggie blurted out. âDaddy said we werenât to bother him at the hospital unless one of us was ill, but I really, really need to talk to him. Itâs totally urgent and important.â Lara stood up and held out her hand. âCome on. Come through and see our toys and Iâll find your daddy. Whereâs Chloe?â âSheâs playing with a friend. I was at home with Nanny Bottle. But she was very thirsty so shedrank and drank and then her eyes went all funny and her voice sounded jumpy. And then she couldnât make my tea.â âNanny Bottle?â Lara tapped in the code and opened the door. âIs she your new nanny?â âYes. Sheâs worse than Nanny TV,â Aggie confided gloomily. âAt least Nanny TV was awakeâwhen she wasnât asleep.â âYour new nanny is asleep?â âI expect she was tired from all that drinking. She sort of drank and drank and then swayed like this and hiccoughed a lot.â Aggie demonstrated. âAnd then her eyes went funny and her voice went jumpy. And she fell asleep.â Drunk? Lara glanced at her in horror as she led her through to Christianâs office. âDonât worry about that now. Youâll be safe here. This is your dadâs office.â âI know. He brought me once so that I can imagine where he is if I miss him during the day.â Aggie
