does.â
She wasnât that sweet. Zack glared at her, and she blinked.
âSorry,â Lucy said. âI donât know whatâs gotten into me today.â
âForget sick leave,â Zack said. âHow much dead leave do you have? Iâm not kidding here. You could be in danger.â
âI thinkââ
âDonât. Trust me on this one. I know what Iâm doing. Somebodyâs been trying to pick your locks.â
âWhat?â
Zack pointed his finger to the back door behind her. âThere are scratches on your back-door lock, and thereâs a piece of metal broken off inside this basement-door lock. Somebodyâs been trying to get in here.â
Lucy swallowed. âBradley?â
âWell, that would be my best guess. He may just be trying to get his golf clubs back. But then againâ¦â He shrugged. âSomebody shot at you on the street today.â
âAt you,â Lucy said, but her voice held a lot less conviction.
âJust stay with your sister for a while. Sheâs got room, right?â
âOh, sheâs got room. But Iâm not going. She canât take the dogs, and Iâm not leaving them.â Lucy stuck her chin in the air. âBesides, I donât believe this.â
Zack lost his temper and stomped up the back porch steps. He grabbed her arm and pulled her around to face the door as he pointed at the lock. âSee those scratches?â His face was so close to hers they were almost nose-to-nose. âThose were made by a pointed metal tool. Somebody was trying to break in.â
Lucy blinked at his closeness. âWell, they didnât get in, did they? So I must be pretty safe.â
âOnly because theyâre trying to be subtle for some reason. Sooner or later, theyâre just going to smash a window and climb in. Lord knows why they havenât already. I advise you to move to your sisterâs.â
âNo,â Lucy said.
Zack let go of her arm and closed his eyes and counted to ten. Then he looked down at her with all the patience he could muster.
She looked up at him, wide-eyed and trusting.
Oh, hell. If somebody did hit her, itâd be his fault for not taking care of her.
He forced himself to speak calmly. âLook, just do me one favor. Stay inside tonight. Iâll call you when I find out more tomorrow, okay? And Iâll have the patrol car keep an eye on you. Just until we can get a handle on your Bradley and see what heâs up to.â
Lucy opened her mouth to speak, and he overrode her again. âJust for tonight and tomorrow. Thatâs not much to ask. Please.â
âIâd have to leave, anyway,â Lucy said. âIâm a teacher. Even if I wasnât going in to school tomorrow, Iâd have to take in lesson plans.â
Zack looked again into Lucyâs huge brown eyes and thought again about how much she needed a keeper.
Not him, of course.
Stillâ¦
âI will take them in. Now, about this sick-leave thing. How long have you been teaching?â
âTwelve years.â
âAnd how many sick days have you taken?â
âNone.â
âThatâs what I figured. So how many do you have saved up?â
âOne hundred and thirty-eight,â Lucy said.
âSo if you use a couple, you could still develop a major disease and have everything covered, right?â
âRight,â Lucy said, âbut thatâs not the point. The point is, Iâm not sick.â
Why was it he finally found an honest citizen only when it worked against him? âLook. Think of this guy whoâs trying to kill you as a life-threatening illness. I do.â
âI really thinkââ
âI told you, donât think. Just do what I tell you. If it will help, Iâll shave and put on a suit and come back and tell you to stay inside. Iâll do whatever it takes. Because I really do think youâre in
