.â
âEstimated?â Chadâs voice was low. âYou just estimated?â
âWell, I know their net worth is about seven hundred million, give or take,â I went on. âSo, I just figured if their money was in a basic savings account at 6% interest per quarter, thatâs what their annual income would be.â I shrugged. âWe never really talk about money much, honestly.â
âHow did your parents,â Eric asked, âmake their money?â
âDid they inherit it?â This was from Chris.
âOh, no.â I laughed. âMy dad was a software designer and started his own company when he got out of college. He invented EZ Accounting . . .â
âOh, my God.â Eric gasped. âIs your father Terry Valentine?â
I nodded, looking from face to face. âYes. Is that a problem?â I swallowed. Maybe Beta Kappa is no different from St. Bernard after all. They donât want me because of who my father isâbut why? My heart sank. I closed my eyes and wished I were a million miles away.
They exchanged glances.
âWell, weâd like to offer you a bid to pledge Beta Kappa,â Chris said, smiling. âWould you like to accept? You donât have to accept right nowââ
âOh, yes, I accept!â My heart felt like it was going to explode in my chest. They want me! âI canât think of anything I would rather do than be a Beta Kappa!â
Eric cleared his throat. âAre you sure you donât want to check out any of the other houses first? We donât want you to think we pressured you into joining us without giving the other houses a chance.â
In my head, I heard Blair saying, â If someone asks you if youâve checked out the other houses, even if you havenât and donât want to, tell them yes. Donât seem too eager to join Beta Kappa. Weâre also required by Interfraternity Council rules to encourage prospectives to look at other houses.â
But theyâd already offered me a bid.
I took a deep breath and forced Blairâs voice out of my head. âI really like it here,â I said. âThe moment I walked into the house I felt like I belonged here. Iâll be the best pledge youâve ever had. Iâll be the best brother youâve ever had. I really, really want to pledge Beta Kappa. I mean, Iâm an A student, and I can help brothers study and tutor and . . .â My voice trailed off.
Idiot! I yelled at myself inside my head. Blair said not to seem too eager. Youâve blown it. Theyâre going to change their minds and ask you to leave.
âIn that case,â Chris said slowly, pushing a small piece of cardboard across the desk to me. I glanced down at it.
The brothers of Beta Kappa fraternity
would like to cordially invite you
to accept a bid to pledge our house.
Underneath those words were the signatures of Chris as president, Eric as pledge marshal, and Chad as Rush chairman.
There was a blank for me to sign my name.
I took the pen Eric was offering me and signed.
âWelcome to Beta Kappa, pledge,â Chris said with a big grin.
I smiled back at him. âThank you.â I fought back the tears I knew would be inappropriate.
I remembered Guy deMontespan and his friends sneering at me.
I remembered all those meals eaten at a table by myself those eight long years at St. Bernard.
I remembered all the slights, the veiled and not-so-veiled insults, the teasing, and the pranks.
Finally, I had fit in somewhere.
Things were going to be different from now on.
Chapter 3
âY ou know, I wanted you from the first moment I saw you,â Chad said, pulling his Beta Kappa T-shirt over his head, âeven with the spinach in your teeth.â
I gulped. I was sitting on the bed in Chadâs room at the house. His body was even more phenomenal than Iâd imagined. His skin was darkly tanned, and there wasnât a single
