employer? I still canât get my head around you working for someone youâve never met,â Angie said. âTechnology is a wonderful thing,â Polly smiled. âThings are going OK. Obviously canât discuss the business with you but I can tell you Iâm waiting for a response to my report about how big an investment is needed. Also their reaction to the plans Will has for the business.â âDâyou think theyâll go for them? Or is that a question too far?â Polly shrugged. âDonât know. Did Lillian or Will tell you I met Jack Pettyjohn the other day? He seems,â she hesitated, âunnaturally interested in the boatyard.â âItâs a major fear of Lillian and Benâs that heâll get his hands on the business. It would kill Ben if that happened â although I think he or Will would kill Jack first. Right, here we are,â and Angie drove into the car park of The Fishermanâs Arms. âLetâs have a stroll along the beach first? Blow the cobwebs away.â By the time they returned to the pub Polly was breathless and ready for her meal. Her mobile rang as they decided on a table in the window. Daniel Franklyn. âIâll go and order shall I?â Angie said. âStraightforward fish and chips. Glass of white wine?â âThanks,â Polly nodded, pressing the button. âHi.â âMy internet died for a couple of hours this afternoon so only just received your report,â Daniel said. âA quick look tells me Iâm probably looking at a quarter of a million pounds initial investment. That the kind of ball-park figure youâre coming up with?â âMore or less.â Polly hesitated. âDaniel, thereâs something I didnât put in the report which is likely to affect things.â Polly looked around and lowered her voice even though there was nobody within earshot. âThere have been a lot of incidents in the past few months that have affected business.â âLike?â âEngines being sabotaged, windows being broken and the other night the barge was set loose from its mooring and damaged an expensive yacht. Somebody seems to want to put the yard out of business.â There was a couple of secondsâ silence at the other end of the line before Daniel said, âIâll sort it once Iâm there.â âSo long as you know what youâre getting into,â Polly said. âAre you planning to be a hands-on investor then? Ben seems to think if youâre not an asset stripper youâll be a sleeping partner.â âWith the amount of money weâre talking about Iâll definitely be more hands-on than sleeping â or absent â I can assure you,â Daniel said. âThanks for the info. Speak tomorrow.â Polly closed her phone thoughtfully as Angie returned with the drinks. âThat the virtual boss?â Polly nodded. âApparently heâs planning on being more hands-on than a sleeping partner. Wonder how Willâs going to like that.â She sipped her wine before saying. âYouâll have to let me know what happens when D⦠when somebody from Worldsend turns up in person? Iâll be back home by then. I canât help wondering how Will will get on with someone else besides Ben having a say in how the business is run.â Since their walk on Dartmoor sheâd been disappointed not to see Will in person. Sheâd had to be content with glimpses of him as he got on with boatyard work. She knew he and Ben had been busy this afternoon pulling the wooden day boats out onto the slipway ready to launch them later when the season got in full flow. âAre you going to this pre-season party Willâs invited me to?â Angie nodded. âDefinitely. Got to give the season a good kick-start. Itâs usually a brilliant evening â so long as the weather is good. You going to
