the connection.” He placed his hand over her heart. “You feel it, you can’t deny it. It’s there; almost a living, breathing, thing between us. I’ll be damned if I’m going to walk away from this.”
Lissa couldn’t look away, as she wondered if he was reading her soul the way she was reading his.
    *****
They spent the day driving around from landmarks to museums, talking and laughing along the way. Phone calls had been made earlier and things were ready for them at every location, either making sure they had the tour to themselves or closing for a short period of time so they were able to walk through without causing a scene. Still, Will and Royce stopped and signed their names or posed for pictures when people did notice who they were.
It was late in the day and their car drove them higher and higher into the hills. Lissa couldn’t help but think what a wonderful day it had been. Everything they’d seen, and sharing it with Will, who was seeing most of it for the first time himself, was fantastic. They’d also found every little excuse to touch each other: a casual touch, holding hands, a quick embrace. It was almost as if they were trying to cram weeks of dating into one day, neither knowing when next they’d see each other.
Resting in Will’s arms, Lissa noticed Hannah bring her phone out of her purse. “Hand it over.” She leaned forward and held her hand out.
“What? No. I have to check messages. I haven’t all day.”
“Exactly. You haven’t all day. Don’t start now.”
    “But…”
    “No buts. Hand it over.”
    “Fine.”
Lissa put the phone in her back jeans pocket. “I told you, you’re taking the day off. The whole day.”
“You give me days off all the time.”
“And this is our vacation day.” Lissa narrowed her eyes at her, tempting her to argue. When she didn’t put up any more of a fight, she knew Hannah was up to something. “I’ll figure it out, you know. So you can just stop planning how to check messages now.”
Hannah smiled and sat back, crossing her arms over her chest. “Of course.”
    “Don’t make me fire you.”
“Oh, that’s what, the tenth time this week? I’m not scared of you.”
“Don’t make me kill you in one of my books.”
    “You already have.”
“Damnit. I can do it again.”
    “Go ahead.”
Settling back into Will’s arms, she laughed. “I’m watching you.”
“Yeah, yeah, yeah.” Hannah turned from her and said something to Royce.
“You’ve got quite a relationship with your assistant,” Will commented as he played with a lock of her hair.
“I’m so lucky to find someone I am friends with and love who can also put up with me and keep me organized so I can spend more time writing. I have to threaten and do whatever I can so she’ll take a break and just relax sometimes.”
“That’s very nice of you. Some people would take advantage.”
Lissa shrugged. “If you have the means, you take care of the people who mean the most to you.”
“I couldn’t agree more. But I do have a question. Let’s say someone wanted to do for you something similar to what you do for Hannah. How would you react?”
She ducked her head. “Not as well.”
“So let me get this straight.” He wrapped his other arm around her so she was trapped. “You want to do nice things for your friends, and you expect them to take it, but when someone wants to do something for you… Let me guess: you feel it’s wrong and you don’t deserve it.”
She played with the rolled-up cuff of his shirt. “How do you know me so well, so quickly?”
“That connection I mentioned before. Plus, I observe people. I’m an actor, so I’m always cataloging human emotion and how different people react to similar situations. Besides, you, darling, are a wonder to observe.”
They pulled over on the road and stopped. She felt she was saved from saying anything to him, and good timing, too. She was at a loss and couldn’t deny her connection to him
