âOh, he loves the idea,â Mrs. Carmichael said. âI talked to him about an hour ago.â
âYou did?â
Mrs. Carmichael nodded enthusiastically, and Zee forced a smile. âGreat.â She couldnât even look at Adam, who was quietly snickering.

The next day in first period, Zeeâs mother held up two paint samplesâone red, one blue. âWhich color do you think will look better for the mall sign?â she asked, stepping into the space between Zee and Landon.
âI think the red one,â Zee said halfheartedly.
âWhat about you, Landon?â Mrs. Carmichael asked.
Landon studied the two colors carefully. âI kinda like the blue one.â
Kathi looked up from where she and Jasper were working on their own scene nearby. âI agree with Zee,â she put in. âThe audience will be able to see red better.â
âThatâs true,â Mrs. Carmichael said. âNow that thatâs decided, maybe I can help you and Zee study your lines, Landon.â
âUhâ¦I guess,â Landon said.
Zee looked from her mother to Kathi and had a horrible realization. Ever since Mr. P had cast the musical, Kathi had been really nice to her. She hadnât acted jealous of her and Landon, or tried to keep them apart, like sheusually did. Instead it was Zeeâs own mom keeping her and Landon apart!
Â
âWhereâs Marcus?â Chloe asked, looking at the empty seat next to Landon at the lunch table that afternoon.
âHeâs in the recording studio with Conrad,â Jen said in a singsong know-it-all voice.
Landon sank down in his seat a little. Then Missy came over with her lunch tray. âMay I sit here?â she asked, pointing to the blank space.
Landon straightened up. âSure.â
Missy sat down and turned to Zee. âYou and your mom must be really great friends,â she said as she opened her carton of milk.
âWhy?â Zee wondered out loud. Because she practically glued herself to me today?
âWell, my dad said he wanted to come help out in the classroom, but I told him, âNo way,ââ Missy explained. âIâd feel like such a geek having him around.â
Chloe jumped in. âWell, Zeeâs mom is really, really awesome.â
âOh, yeah,â Zee agreed. âSheâs the best.â
âSo I know you guys really like music. Thatâs pretty obvious. What else do you like to do?â Missy asked, changingthe subject. As she spoke, she twisted her long, dark hair around her fingers.
Chloe swallowed a bite of an energy bar. âI play soccer. And Jasper and I are in charge of the campus planting project.â
Jasper looked up from his tomato-and-cucumber salad and smiled.
âI like to surf!â Landon joined in.
âThat must be why youâre so tan,â Missy said to him.
âYeah, you can definitely tell the bennies from the surfers,â Landon told her.
âBennies?â
âOh, sorry. The tourists. Actually, they even have a name for young
