on her parts of the musical, she wanted to see what progress everyone else had made.
Marcus and Conrad had posted a song theyâd mixed for the soundtrack! Zee clicked on the clip. An amazing sound streamed through the computerâs speakers. âCool beans!â Zee read Conradâs description of how the boys had gone to the mall and recorded the sounds there. Then they put it all together in the schoolâs music studio.
But as Zee logged off, her excitement faded away. She remembered what Landon had said about how much time Marcus was spending with Conrad. The music was incredible, but would Landon feel left out that Marcus and Conrad had recorded it without him? Zee felt bad for Landon.

Motherâs Helper
âH ow was your afternoon, Zee?â Mr. Carmichael asked at dinner that night.
Zee put a forkful of salmon in her mouth and looked at her mother. âFine?â she said suspiciously, certain her parents had already talked.
âWhat did you do?â
âI worked really hard on my homework.â Zee spoke fast. âFor all my subjectsâexcept music. I even did extra credit for English.â
âIâm glad that you did your schoolwork,â Zeeâs dad continued. âBut I think we need to have a talk.â
âAbout what?â Zee asked.
âYeah, about what?â Adam chimed in.
Mrs. Carmichael looked at Adam with her this-doesnât-concern-you face, then turned back to Zee.
âItâs not a good idea to give all of your attention to one thing.â
âYou mean, like English?â Zee asked hopefully.
âNo, I mean like the musical.â
âBut I know I want to be a singer. And a songwriter,â Zee added. âAnd Mr. P thinks Iâm really good.â
âYour dad and I think youâre really good, too,â Mrs. Carmichael said.
Adam held up his finger, then gulped down a mouthful of barley salad. âFor the record, I think youâre really good, too.â
âAwwwâ¦thanks!â Zee said, turning to her brother.
Adam pointed back to their parents. âPay attention.â
âYouâre only twelve,â Mrs. Carmichael continued.
âYouâve got your whole life to become a singer,â Zeeâs dad added.
âIs this about the D plus?â Zee protested. âI promise it wonât happen again. I can handle all my classes and the musical. I can get back on track.â
âWeâre worried about Landon, too,â Mrs. Carmichael said.
âWhat about him?â Zee asked.
âYou might be a little too focused on him as well.â
âHeâs my costar!â
âIs that the only reason?â
Adam started making kissing noises, so Zee kicked him under the table.
âOwww!â her brother cried out. âThatâs the last time I compliment you.â
âIf youâre going to rehearse with Landon,â Mrs. Carmichael continued, âit has to be in Mr. Pâs classroom or here.â
Zeeâs cheeks started to burn. âButââ Zee began.
âWeâve talked about it and believe itâs the best solution,â Mr. Carmichael said. âWe do realize thereâs a lot to get done before the showââ
Finally, Zee thought, they get it.
âSo Iâll be helping out in the classroom,â Mrs. Carmichael said.
âWhat?â Zee shouted.
âSweet!â Adam said. âI should have popped some popcorn for this.â
âWhat do you mean in the classroom?â Zee asked.
âYou know.â Mrs. Carmichael stabbed her salad with her fork. âIâll come and work with the students onwhatever needs to be doneâbuilding, painting, recording, anything. Even costumes!â
âWhile Iâm there?â
âYes, of course.â
âI donât know if Mr. P will like that.â Zee scrambled for an excuse. âHe probably doesnât want parents interfering with his
