in world history. It looked like a beautiful city,â Joe said, probing for information.
âI wouldnât knowâIâve never been there,â Jons said. âA fella I served with knew the owners of the company that makes the soap. He had them send me a box of it.â
âThatâs funny,â Frank said innocently. âJoe wassure he saw two pet carriers in your cabin that had tags on them from the airport in Kiev.â
âWhat were you doing in Mr. Jonsâs cabin?â Craven asked calmly, though his face was turning red.
âThe pet carriers are mine,â Jons explained. âI flew up to New York with my own dog last week; maybe those are the tags you saw.â
âWhy did you take two dog carriers?â Frank pressed.
âThatâs enough, Frank,â Craven warned.
âNo, letâs clear this up,â Jons said. âI went to New York to see a friend who had Doberman puppies, but I decided not to buy one.â
âI saw Kiev airport tags on them,â Joe insisted.
âWell, letâs have a look,â Jons said. âI was taking them to the church thrift store, so theyâre in the back of the truck.â Jons removed a plastic tarp, revealing the two pet carriers in the bed of his pickup.
Joe grabbed the tags. âSee, itâs forââ Joe halted as he saw the LGA on the tag.
âLGA for La Guardia Airport, New York,â Craven said, glaring at Joe. âDo you have anything youâd like to say?â
âSomeone switched them,â Joe protested.
âMr. Craven, we heard the two huskies barking inside Mr. Jonsâs cabin not fifteen minutes ago,â Frank said, jumping to his brotherâs defense.
âI canât imagine what theyâre talking about,â Jons said, shrugging.
âYou have to believe us, Mr. Craven,â Joe pleaded.
âMr. Jons, I hate to bother you,â Craven said, âbut would you mind showing these boys there are no huskies hiding in your cabin?â
Jons shifted his weight and ran his fingers through his hair. âYouâre going to believe these teenagers over me?â
âIâm not saying that,â Craven said. âWeâre just very eager to find those dogs.â
Jons suddenly smiled. âWould these be the dogs youâre talking about?â
The Hardys turned around and both their mouths dropped open in stunned surprise. A tall, lean man with a drawn face and a sheriffâs uniform was walking toward them, escorting Rob Daniels in handcuffs. A deputy had two gray Siberian huskies muzzled and on leashes.
âI found your burglar, Mr. Craven,â the sheriff said. âRob Daniels here has made a full confession.â
9 A Surprise Confession
----
âWhat did you say?â Frank asked, unable to believe his ears.
âConfessed to what?â Joe added.
âBreaking and entering and stealing property with the help of these two husky dogs,â the sheriff replied.
Daniels stood silent and stone faced.
âThank you for tracking him down, Sheriff Lyle,â Craven said.
Lyle arched an eyebrow and looked at Daniels. âI didnât track him down. Mr. Daniels walked up to us near the old asylum with these two dogs. He gave himself up.â
âThese arenât Mr. Danielsâs dogs,â Frank protested.
âYes, they are,â Daniels insisted. âTheyâre straysI found a few months ago. Iâve been keeping them up at the old asylum.â
âWhy did you do this, Mr. Daniels?â Craven asked.
âI needed money,â Daniels said in a flat voice.
âYou are going to need money,â Lyle growled. âYou have four hundred and seventy-five dollars in parking tickets and penalty fees.â
âReach into my front right pocket,â Daniels said.
Sheriff Lyle pulled out a large roll of cash from Danielsâs pocket.
âI canât accept stolen money,â
