third time. He sat with Danielle and Chris in Pier Café.
âIf you keep saying that, someone is going to hear,â Danielle whispered.
âI just thought you needed to know the truth, since youâre my real estate agent,â Chris told him.
âIâm glad you told me now, before I wrote up the purchase contract,â Adam said.
âYou do understand; Chris prefers to remain anonymous. Do you think thatâll be possible?â
âIt shouldnât be a problem. The sellers live out of state. I doubt theyâll give the buyerâs name much thought.â Adam picked up his coffee and took a sip.
âIf I can maintain my anonymity through this purchase, it could be very profitable for you,â Chris told him.
Adam set his mug back onto the table. âWhat do you mean?â
âIâve been considering purchasing property in Oregon for several projects Iâve been working on. I need a local real estate agent. I know you specialize in property management and theseââ
âAre you suggesting you might use me?â Adam interrupted.
âYes. If Iâm able to continue flying under the wire.â
Adam reached across the table to shake Chrisâ hand. âIâd be more than happy to help you find the perfect properties, Mr. Johnson .â
With a laugh, Chris accepted the handshake.
A few minutes later, the server brought their order. Just as she left their table, Heather Donovan entered the restaurant. Instead of stopping by to say hello, Danielleâs neighbor took a table on the other side of the room.
Danielle watched Heather, who stared blankly at her menu. âHeather doesnât seem particularly friendly today.â
Both Chris and Adam glanced briefly to Danielleâs neighbor.
âFrom what Bill tells me, she has a mess on her hands,â Adam said just before he picked up his burger and took a bite.
âMess? What do you mean?â Danielle glanced from Adam to Heather.
âShe called Bill about a water leak. I guess itâs been leaking for some time. Thereâs some major mold going on in the walls between the kitchen and living room.â
Danielle cringed. âMold?â
âYep. And she needs to move out while they make repairs. She called me the other day about somewhere to stay; but she has that cat. I donât have anything available right now thatâll allow pets.â
âThere has to be some place she can stay,â Chris said.
âI have owners willing to take small dogs, but not cats. Itâs allergies. There are a lot of people who are allergic to cats and wonât rent from us if a catâs stayed in the house.â
Danielle let out a sigh. âYeah, we have that problem with Max, which is why I disclose the fact we have a cat before I accept someoneâs reservation.â
âYou can afford to turn away guests; I canât.â Adam took another bite of his burger.
âShe really looks unhappy, doesnât she?â Danielle said.
Chris eyed Danielle. âWhat are you thinking?â
âWell, I rent rooms. I think we could handle another cat.â
âOh really?â Chris laughed. âI wonder if Max would agree.
Danielle sighed. âYou have a point. Max loathes other cats. Butâ¦we could explain it to himâ¦â
Adam paused mid-bite and looked across the table to Danielle. âExplain it to him?â
âShe did save my life,â Danielle murmured, still looking at Heather.
âIf she takes a room, you might as well change the name of Marlow House Bed and Breakfast to Marlow House Boarding House,â Chris teased.
Danielle laughed. âYou have a point. I have you and Lilyâ¦â Danielle stood up.
Adam looked up. âWhere are you going?â
âDo you really need to ask?â Chris said after Danielle flashed them both a smile and walked to Heatherâs table.
