Danielle greeted when she reached Heatherâs side.
Closing her menu, Heather looked up at Danielle. âUmmâ¦hi. I saw you when I came in, but I didnât want to interrupt.â
âDo you mind if I sit down a moment?â
âUmmâ¦sureâ¦I mean...no, I donât mind.â
âI heard you have a mold issue.â Danielle took a seat.
Heather groaned. âIf that was my only problem. What do they say, when it rains it pours?â
âYeah, I understand youâve been having a hard time finding someplace to stay because of Bella.â
âRightâ¦that too.â Heather tossed the menu to the table.
âYou mean you have more problems than mold and finding a place to stay?â
âIâve lost Presley House, Danielle.â
âYeah, I know. I was there when it burned down.â
âNo, I mean the property. Iâve lost it.â
âI donât understand.â
âI told you Mother had power of attorney for my grandfather, after he was committed. I didnât realize what a mess everything was. The property manager wasnât getting paid; the electric meter was pulled. But whatâs worse, the property tax wasnât being paid.â
âYouâve lost the land for back taxes?â
Heather nodded. âI had no idea. They sent the notices to the wrong address. I spoke to someone in the assessorâs office, and she told me she was looking into itâ¦that something looked odd.â
âOdd?â
âYeah. Just between you and me, she said there was something odd about the file. I may have to get an attorney. Not that I can afford one now.â
âHave they sold the property yet?â
âYes. Deep inside I know this entire thing isnât kosher. Something crooked went on.â
âSeriously?â
âYes. But I canât think about it right now. Iâm trying to figure out where Iâm going to stay tonight. As it is, I have to get rid of most of my upholstered furnitureâeven my bed. The mold got into everything.â
âItâs that bad?â
âWorse. I donât know what Iâm going to do. I suppose I should just find a home for Bella, but I donât want to do that.â
âStay with me. Bellaâs welcome.â
âStay with you? I canât do that. I canât afford to stay at an inn.â
âWeâll work something out. Heather, if it wasnât for you, I couldâve died in that fire. And you didnât have to give me the emerald. I can give it back to you. You can use it to pay for an attorney, help get your property back.â
Heather shook her head. âNo. I canât do that. That emerald belongs to you. The sins of my great-grandfather demand that it be returned to the rightful owner.â
âYou had nothing to do with what he did.â
âI feel cursed enough these days. I donât want to test fate.â
âYouâre serious, arenât you?â
âVery.â
âAt least accept my invitation to stay while your house is fixed.â
âDanielle, they say itâs going to take a month, or more.â
âThatâs okay. Iâm letting Chris rent a room while he waits for his house to close escrow.â
âChris is buying a house?â
âYes, on our street. Heâll be our new neighbor.â
âSweet. When does he move in?â
âI donât know. The sellers have just decided on an asking price; they havenât even written up a purchase contract yet. But I donât imagine itâll take more than a month.â
âItâll probably take longer than that. Getting loan approval can be a bitch, and Chris isnât working yet, is he?â
âUmmâ¦I believe he has a little inheritance heâs using to help him buy the house.â
âNice.â
âSo, you want to stay at Marlow House?â
âIâd like toâ¦but I
