friends.
“Early last summer, Louisa and I bumped into each other at a stable in Ireland where we were both purchasing horses.
“It was at the end of April… I took Louisa to dinner and she confided in me that she suspected even then William was having an affair with Maxine, his secretary. “I consoled her, and I’m afraid my longstanding attraction to her won out over my self-control. I seduced her.”
Geraldine raised her eyebrows. “Please continue, Mr. de Velaquado …”
“We had five wonderful days in Ireland, and then agreed to part because she was married and takes the wedding vows very seriously. Louisa was determined to try to work things out with William.
“I didn’t know until I came to England yesterday that the baby she is carrying is my child. I am delighted, to say the least and we will marry as soon as she is free.”
Rodriguez shut up and looked expectantly at the solicitor.
“Oh. This puts a bit of a wrinkle into my plans. I had expected to serve Mr. Spenser on the grounds of adultery.”
“Actually, he was unfaithful with his secretary long before I turned to ‘Riguez for comfort,” said Louisa.
“I knew ‘Riguez from the Equestrian Circuit before I met William. If I had realized ‘Riguez returned my feelings for him, I’d never have married William. But he was married at the time, a loveless marriage arranged by his parents and he too has great respect for the marriage contract so he never declared his feeling for me,” continued Louisa with a straight face.
“Does William know?”
“He does not.”
Louisa paused.
“But he did say he’d relinquish any claim to the baby for two million pounds.”
“Did he now?”
“He did, but Daddy isn’t favourable to giving him anything.”
“No, Mr. Browning would not be. I have strict instructions that we are not to give William a penny. Do you know who your husband’s solicitor is?”
“I don’t but let’s find out.” Louisa pulled out her mobile, and called William. She hit the speaker button so Geraldine and Rodriguez could hear the conversation.
“William,” she said as soon as he answered, “My solicitor wants to know who your solicitor is. I want this over as soon as possible.”
“Jensen Hamilton,” answered William. “I want it over as well. You’ve probably figured out I need to marry Maxine as soon as possible.”
“I want to marry ‘Riguez as soon as possible as well, William. Daddy says I can’t give you any money. ‘Riguez is actually the father of my baby, so don’t even think you have to renounce rights to the baby, because it isn’t yours and ‘Riguez just wants to get married before it is born.”
“Who the hell is ‘Riguez?”
“Rodriguez de Velaquado. He’s one of Espagnolia’s top equestrians. He doesn’t find horses and riding obnoxious.”
“Probably only after your money, honey,” sneered William. “I’m sure most of those foreign riders don’t have your resources. He’s just looking for another patron.”
“Not likely, he’s as rich as Daddy and he’s a prince,” laughed Louisa.
“So there is no way you’ll be coming after me for any child support?”
They could hear the relief in William’s voice.
“You’ll never hear from me again, William.”
“Well, my father has his legal team looking over the pre-nup, and if there is a way for us to break it, Louisa, you know he’s going to try. He said I’m probably entitled to half the value of our family home even if it is in your name only, and that is about five million if we count the one we live in now. He said it would be pushing it to go after half the new one, since it’s being renovated and I never lived there.”
“Your father should be careful,” said Rodriguez into the phone. “He is in a very precarious position and both Graeme Browning and I are ready to take advantage of that.”
“Who are you, the boyfriend?”
“The fiancé.”
“How do you know my father has financial
