spend some
time with her away from work and I love how great our dates always
feel. I get along with Starlet really well, so much better than any
of my previous girlfriends, and we can talk for hours without
getting bored.
    Our main
courses arrive and Starlet hungrily starts to eat her plate of
battered chicken and chips. I can’t wait to get stuck into my steak
and chips and it tastes delicious. However, I only eat half of it
before my mobile ringtone goes off.
    Starlet looks
over at my mobile a little worried, knowing exactly what it’s going
to be. I dread answering it too because I really don’t want to be
pulled away from her when we’re having a good night together. I
already have the mobile sat beside me on the table, in case I get
called in for something, and see from the screen that it’s a call
from Bryan.
    “ Sorry,” I
quickly apologise to Starlet before answering the phone call. “Hey
Bry, what’s up?”
    “ Hi Rickie, you
don’t mind coming down to the office and helping me out with
something, do you?” he asks and I feel deflated.
    “ Yeah, sure,” I
answer. “I’m not at the base right now but I can make it over in
about twenty minutes.”
    “ Okay, I’ll see
you soon.”
    “ Laters,” I say
and hang up.
    Starlet’s
already looking at me, waiting for me to tell her the bad news that
she already knows is coming.
    “ I’m really
sorry, I need to go,” I say sadly.
    She looks upset
too, although she’s trying to hide it, “At least we made it to main
course. I really wish we could have got to desert though,” she
jokes.
    “ Star, you know
I really want to stay,” I tell her regrettably, “but it’s going to
take time to wait for a taxi and get back, and Bryan wouldn’t have
rung on my night off if it wasn’t important. I’ll have to go right
now.”
    “ It’s okay, I
understand,” she says but her eyes fill with disappointment and
sadness and I feel so bad. I can’t stand that I’ve had to ruin our
date by cutting it short and leaving her.
    I throw on my
leather jacket and get out my wallet, “don’t worry about the cost,
I’ll pay for everything.”
    She takes the
money I offer her and looks dejected.
    “ It’s going to
be so embarrassing sitting here eating on my own,” she
says.
    “ I know. I’m
really sorry,” I say guiltily. I know it will look bad to everyone
in the restaurant, leaving my girlfriend stranded on her own when
we’re obviously on a date.
    “ You should
ring Sarah or Kat to come over,” I suggest. “They can even have my
desert or meet you for drinks at the bar?”
    She looks a
little relieved at the idea, “yeah, that sounds like a plan.
Besides, it would be awful to waste your chocolate fudge
cake.”
    We share a
smile and I wish more than anything I could stay with her. We were
both looking forward to the desert.
    “ I’ll make it
up to you,” I promise. “Bye Star, I’ll call you later.”
    I feel bad as I
call for a taxi and wait for it to arrive. This situation has
happened a few times in the past and it makes me a little nervous.
I don’t want it to cause trouble like it has before. I don’t want
my job to get in the way of Starlet because she’s too important to
lose. I want our relationship to work so much. It stings my heart
just to think if one day she might ask me to choose between us and
my job, just like Nicola had…
    I see the taxi
arrive and get inside, giving him an address for a pub near to our
base instead, since the location has to be kept a secret at all
times. I try not to feel too sad as I stare out of the window
thinking. Starlet wouldn’t really do the same, would she? She has
the same job as me too, so she understands what it means to both of
us. I really don’t want to give it up and I’d do anything to keep
Starlet as my girlfriend.
    It had hurt me
pretty bad when Nicola and I broke up and I had missed her so much.
However, there’s no way I could ever get over Starlet and find
another girlfriend to
