Tomââ
âMy father recently suffered a stroke,â Monica volunteered.
âIâm so sorry,â Cassie offered sympathetically. âHow is he doing?â
âNot well, Iâm afraid, which puts me in charge of his business affairs for the foreseeable future.â
âI see.â Cassie nodded. âIf thatâs the case, perhaps youâd like to join Ty and me for dinner. We were going to review some conceptual sketches I made for the new hotel.â
âIâd really hate for either of us to waste your time, Cassie.â She slanted a pointed gaze at Ty. âThe renovation project has been shelved. Thereâs a strong possibility Iâll be selling this property.â
âOh.â Cassie looked to Ty as if seeking confirmation.
Ty cleared his throat with a forced smile. âThereâs still a possibility of moving forward. But Iâll have to make a few calls about lining up some investors.â
âSo the project isnât completely dead?â Cassie asked.
âNot completely,â Monica interjected, âbut I wouldnât advise you to hold your breath waiting for a contract.â
âRight, then. I quite understand.â Cassie collected her drawings. âAnother time then, Ty?â
âSure, Cassie,â he replied, tight-lipped and silently cursing Monica for making him look like an ass. âIâll call you.â
âGreat,â Cassie replied. âIâll look forward to that. It was nice meeting you, Ms. Brandt. Let me know if youâd like to do lunch one day. Ty has my number.â
âOh, Iâm sure he does,â Monica replied as Cassie headed back toward the elevator.
Ty waited until the doors closed before he spoke. âResentful, Ms. Brandt?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âAfraid Iâd get what you didnât?â
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âYou didnât want me seeing her.â He jammed the express elevator button, annoyed as hell that Monica had purposely sabotaged the dinner date. He had no doubt it was intentional, and by God, heâd make her pay.
âDonât be ridiculous,â she snapped. âIâd never be so petty. Besides, Iâm the one who called it off, remember?â
Whether she wanted to admit it yet or not, their almost encounter counted. Maybe it was even worse because theyâd left the personal side of their business unfinished.
âYeah, I remember all right, but something tells me we need to revisit the situation we left unresolved in your office.â
âI assure you there isnât any situation .â
âYouâre a bad liar, Monica. If youâve changed your mind, just say so. We donât have to go far. Itâs a hotel, after all.â
âI havenât changed my mind. I just explained to her how things are, which you should have already done.â
âI would haveâover dinnerâbut you didnât give me the chance.â
âYou should thank me that I saved you the trouble.â She smiled smugly. âAnd her the disappointment.â
âI donât ever disappoint a lady, Ms. Brandt. Itâs a point of honor.â
âYou mean ego.â
He shrugged. âYouâre splitting hairs. The motive doesnât matter as long as sheâs satisfied.â
âSo you did have designs on her,â she accused.
âIâm not the one who issued the dinner invitation. Maybe she had designs on me .â
âYou really do think a lot of yourself, donât you, cowboy?â she snorted. âIt takes more than a big dick to please a woman.â
Her mention of size was very telling. She still wanted him, all right.
âIt sure doesnât hurt,â he chuckled. âBut for the record, sweetheart, Iâve never had any complaints about my hands or my mouth either, and Iâd be mighty glad to prove it to you.â
