Fabian. “I thought you didn’t like business.”
“I’m not against business in general. I’m against being forced to participate in business that I have no interest in. I’ve managed to grow my trust fund threefold just by making smart investments in real estate and stocks. I pay a money manager handsomely to give me solid advice.”
“Wow. That’s impressive. You probably won’t admit it, but you’ve inherited Gray’s business savvy.”
“Not really. My grandpa James took me under his wing and taught me lots about business and life. I love him so much and really miss him a lot. Granpa James gave me the emotional love I desperately needed. Gray distanced himself from me emotionally once he realized I wasn’t going to be a carbon copy of him. To make up for that grandpa spent hours talking with me and sharing all sorts of wisdom about life.”
“Your grandpa sounds like a great guy.”
“He was. I still talk to him sometimes when I’m alone. I like to think he’s looking down on me and sending me positive spiritual energy. I sure could use some now.”
Claire is moved by Fabian’s love for his grandfather. She barely knew her own grandfather. He passed away when she was four. She doesn’t understand how Gray could be so cold and uncaring towards his own son. Why do some parents try forcing their kids to be just like them? She was raised to think of everyone as being a person with a unique way of being in the world. She and Fabian share this belief, which is one of the reasons they understand each other so well. She accepts who he is as an individual and vice versa. There’s no pressure to be something you’re not.
Claire can only imagine the pain Gray inflicted on Fabian while he was growing up. Every child desires to please their parents on some deep level, even kids that rebel. Fabian knows his erratic lifestyle annoys Gray. She’s no psychologist, but she thinks Fabian may act out in certain ways because he’s still that little boy seeking attention from his dad.
“I could use another drink about now.”
    “You don’t need one, Fabian.”
Fabian’s face crumbles into a wall of hurt. “How do you know what I need, Claire? You were ready to turn your back on me too.”
“No. I was never going to…”
“Admit it. You think I’m a loser just like Gray, and now Nathan.”
“Don’t put words in my mouth, Fabian. I don’t think you’re a loser.”
Tears stream down Fabian’s cheeks. His emotional dam is bursting. “Everyone I love turns their back on me, except grandpa James.”
Claire beckons for Fabian to join her on the couch. Any fear she had of him hurting her has melted away. All she wants to do at this moment is to hold him in her arms and let him feel her nurturing spirit. “Fabian, come here and sit next to me. Come on.”
Fabian obeys and sits close to Claire. She wraps her arms around him tightly, which causes him to sob uncontrollably over her shoulder. It’s as if he’s been holding in a mountain of pain for a long time. Claire’s loving nature is allowing him to release all of those suppressed emotions.
Claire gently strokes his head and whispers in his ear. “That’s good. Let it out, baby. I’m here for you.”
“Dad loves Nathan more than he does me,” Fabian blurts out through his tears. “He fawns over him and brags about his accomplishments. He acts like I’m some acquaintance he has to put up with. Just once I want him to say that he loves me. Just once.”
Claire kisses his tearstained face and continues her empathetic nurturing. “It’s going to be alright, baby. I love you and that’s all that matters.”
Fabian stops sobbing. “You do? You really love me?”
Claire is surprised that those words slipped out of her mouth so easily. She didn’t try to censor her words. She just allowed her heart to speak what she already knew.
“Yes. I love you, Fabian Cooper. Maybe I’m crazy to, but that’s the truth. I can’t help how I feel.
