Christmas party. But, he never discussed it. It was as if our night of passionate sex never occurred. This was the second day that I didn’t hear from Andriano. Sulking around, I became disappointed in myself that I was so easily affected by his sudden absence.
Victoria arranged a double date with Kurt and his friend, Jacob. From what Victoria could gather, Jacob is a bartender at The Land. He is 23 years old, biracial, and a resident of Harlem. He majored in merchandising at a fashion institute in the city. I was not entirely excited about our date. In fact, I was in a dreadful despair. Because I had promised Victoria that I would leave Andriano alone, I hid our brief two weeks of communication from her.
“We are going to meet them at Mr. Ping’s restaurant in Brooklyn at 6:30,” Victoria informed me with excitement as she put her earring on her left ear.
Looking in the mirror, I began searching for excuses to get out of the double date. In the end, I convinced myself that the quicker I moved on from Andriano, the better for everyone. Dressed in dark denim skinny jeans, with a plain white long sleeve shirt, I knew that I didn’t necessarily look my best. After a moment of pondering, I decided to spruce up my outfit with two stud earrings with the matching necklace. I slid up my new thigh high pleather boots that I purchased earlier for $20. I managed to squeeze out a little confidence, as I spent the next ten minutes experimenting with different hairstyles. In the end, I raked my fingers through my freshly washed and air-dried hair and piled it up into a messy textured bun. After much convincing, I allowed Victoria to complete my look with mascara, eyeliner, brown lip liner, and nude lipstick.
When we arrived at Mr. Ping’s , a downtown faddishly laid back crowded Asian restaurant, we saw Kurt and Jacob waiting alongside the entrance. After the formal introductions had been made, we went inside and were seated by our waitress. Jacob was attractive with his trendy ‘urban meets chic’ style. He was a few shades lighter than my dark skin complexion, and he had the most beautiful doe brown eyes. His gorgeous smile matched his laid back friendly demeanor. He sported a high top haircut with springy curls. He was only a couple of inches taller than my 5’5” height, and he was on the more slim side in size.
We enjoyed each other’s company, as we spoke about his dreams of becoming a fashion designer and celebrity stylist. He was originally from Houston, Texas, but he relocated to New York City to pursue his passion for fashion two years earlier.
“I could only imagine how much of shock it was for you when you first felt the New York winter. It was almost a good enough reason, for me, to head back to Texas my damn self,” he said with a laugh.
“I thank God that I survived it. Besides the cold winter, I had to get used to many things in New York, like the train and reading a map for directions. I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it,” I responded. We continued to talk about the differences between the south and north.
Not wanting the night to end, we decided to head over to The Land . Although I felt too underdressed to be at The Land , Jacob reassured me that I looked fine. We sat at in a booth near the bar and dance floor. I took one shot, as the rest of the group took three shots. Grabbing my hand, Jacob led me to the dance floor. Some old school Hip Hop songs came on, causing Jacob and me to do some old popular dance moves. Our time on the dance floor ended with shared laughter. Walking back to the bar, Jacob ordered another shot as I ordered a bottle of water. Victoria and Kurt went upstairs towards the VIP section while Jacob and I made our way back to the dance floor.
A short while later, Jacob sat back down in the booth and watched as I danced to another popular tune. Jacob reappeared back on the dance floor a few songs later. Closing my eyes, I allowed my waist to grind in a circular rhythmic
