Chapter 9

The sound of sirens in the distance causes me to stir. Getting closer and I slowly open my eyes to close my bedroom window. Sirens in the middle of the night piss me off.
“Don't move, buddy, the ambulance is coming,” a male voice tells me as hands hold both sides of my head so I can't move. My eyes flick around fast and furiously trying to figure out what's going on.
“What the fuck?” I whisper out loud. Panic fills my voice and my breathing begins to turn to a nervous pant. The sirens are for me – Oh shit! I'm starting to remember. My bike, the ground. A m I okay? Will I be alright?
“You were in an accident. You were unconscious when I found you. I used your phone to call 9-1-1. Mine was in my car, yours was laying beside you.” His face is hovering above mine. I can barely make out his features. “I don't think it was that long ago though, your bike's tires were still spinning on the shoulder of the road.” He attempts to assure me.
Police and an ambulance pull up and block off traffic going in both directions. Fucking fantastic, I'm the douche that shut down PCH today. The tabloids are going to have a field day with this one. I can hear them talking with the guy that's holding my head.
“Buddy, what's your name?” the ambulance attendant asks.
“Desmond,” I reply as the guy who was helping moved aside and the attendants wrap a collar around my neck. “Did I break my neck?” I ask.
“We don't know, sir. We want to get you to the hospital and get some x-rays. This is a precaution.” I am then rolled to my side and rolled back to my back where I am strapped to a back board. “Just stay still, sir, we'll transport you right away.”
“Where's the guy that helped me?” I ask as they begin wheeling me to the ambulance.
“He's speaking with the Highway Patrol. Please, sir, let us get you to the hospital.”
I'm pushed into the ambulance and the doors close, the siren starts up and the voices start speaking in medical code that I don't understand. Silently I lay there with a throbbing leg, wishing I knew the guy's name. I'd like to thank him.
After I arrive at the hospital I am sent through a battery of tests and scans. Hours later I am finally finished with my MRI and I am wheeled back to the emergency department where there's a constant buzzing and beeping of voices and machines. Sometimes weeping can be heard from behind one of the curtains and it makes me feel like shit, knowing I did such a stupid fucking thing and I barely have a scratch. I rock my head back and forth on the pillow and pull my phone from my jeans pocket. Searching through contacts, I make my selection and press call.
Lexi answers on the second ring. “Hey, Des! How are you doing sexy?” She sounds cheery and I am very happy to hear her voice after my realization from last night.
Laughing softly I reply, “You're gonna be pissed at me. I did something so fucking stupid.” I squeeze my eyes shut and pinch the bridge of my nose.
    “What did you do?”
“I'm at the hospital, babe. I had an accident this morning.” I hear her gasp.
“I'm on my way! What happened? You do want me there right? Shit. What did you do? Is–”
“Yes please! Come pick me up. I want to get the fuck out of here.” And see you I think to myself. “I'll answer any question you have when you get here.”
I hear her engine start and the music blares briefly before she curses under her breath and the volume drops again. “Okay, I'm pulling out now. I'll be there soon.”
“Sounds good. Drive safe.” I hang up the phone and go back to listening to the sounds of the emergency department. I go to move my leg and pain shoots up my thigh. Hissing in a sharp breath, I close my eyes in defeat and decide just to wait for her to arrive. My phone rings in my hand and I look at the screen. Lexi?
“Babe, you should be driving,” I answer without a
