could see no way of getting Gordon to give up any day soon. He had promised Gordon’s mother, a close friend of his own mother’s, to keep an eye on him, and to try to keep Gordon out of trouble. He was torn between his promise to her, and his natural instincts for self-preservation. He decided to wait a while longer, but if the situation got worse, or he felt he was risking his own liberty, Gordon would be on his own, promise or no promise. Jackson’s mother wouldn’t expect her only son to risk prison on Gordon’s account.

    * * * *

    As Head of Security for Prometheus in Chains, Eric or his assistant watched and saw Jack following Gordon and Jackson every day as they followed Fiona’s car, but they didn’t seem to have noticed him. Now, in the club with all the interested parties seated and listening to him, he said, “The plan is this. We will let it appear that Fiona is in the car park on her own again, Gordon and Jackson won’t be able to resist trying to take her. Once we get them inside the grounds we’ve a couple of large volunteers to beat the living daylights out of them, give them a taste of their own medicine. It can’t be Ruari or Alexander. Gordon knows them and will assume it’s them. He’ll be able to give the police a description, so they need to be able to show they’ve not hit him or Jackson. It has to be someone with no connection with Fiona. Master Torquil has arranged for two of his friends to help out. One of the friends’ sisters had an abusive boyfriend, so he has an axe to grind. Well, that’s it, so we go tonight,” Eric informed everyone.
    Later that night Eric’s assistant, replacing him in front of the security cameras, reported Gordon’s car in the road, and he and Jackson were outside the wall, peering through the entrance. Eric told Fiona to walk out of the main door and call back over her shoulder that she just needed to go and collect something from her car and would be back in a couple of minutes.
    They all watched Gordon and Jackson as they crept through the gate, upon hearing her voice and seeing she was alone. As she walked over to her car and took out her key, they launched themselves at her. Gordon took the stopper out of a glass bottle and was about to hurl the contents of the bottle at her when he tripped and the bottle flew out of his hand and smashed against her car. It narrowly missed her, but some of the liquid splashed over her skirt. Then Eric gave the signal, and all hell broke loose as Torquil’s friends took hold of Gordon and Jackson and proceeded to give them a taste of their own medicine. Gordon screamed as he struggled and tried to get away from the first friend, but he was not strong enough to break free, it seemed. Eric heard a sickening crack and assumed Gordon’s arm had been broken as he fought to free it from the other man’s grip. The other friend of Torquil’s was dealing with Jackson, and his huge fist connected with his jaw and must surely have broken it.
    Both of them were punched and beaten bloody, they put up little resistance, confirming everyone’s opinion that they were only brave when faced with weaker opponents, and then as fast as it began, it was over. The large men were gone and the police arrived, called by Jack.
    Angus and Prometheus, the owners of the club, coming out to find out what the fuss was about, listened to the exchange between Gordon and the policeman.
    Eric smiled as he heard Gordon say, “It was those two men she is living with, they’ve broken my arm. We did nothing at all. I just came to talk to me ex-girlfriend. I want them arrested and charged with assault.”
    Eric was pleased to see that the plan was working. He spoke to his assistant on the phone, and Alexander and Ruari came out of the club by the main entrance. It was plain that they hadn’t been in a fight.
    “Those are the men, constable, do your duty, arrest them. They assaulted us.” Gordon was beside himself with fury.
    “Good evening, sirs.
