had an idea. âHe once called you on your cell phone, right?â
âYeah? So?â
âDonât cell phones usually save the return numbers?â
Bean glanced at Kai. âAre you crazy?â
Kai pointed at the car behind them. âYouknow a better way to find out if thatâs him?â
âYou really are crazy,â Bean said.
âWhatâs the problem?â
It was Beanâs turn to gesture to the car following them. âWhat if it
is
him?â
âThen he already knows where we are, so what do we have to lose?â
âI hope you know what youâre doing.â Bean dug his cell phone out of his pocket, and handed it to Kai, who went through the numbers, reading the names out loud until he got to Albert Hines.
âNever heard of that one,â Bean said. âCould be him.â
Kai pressed âsend.â The phone rang, then someone answered. âYeah?â
âAlbert, that you?â Kai said.
âYeah, whoâs this?â
âWhere are you right now?â Kai asked.
There was silence for a moment, then Kai heard Goldilocks mutter to himself, âNo fricken way.â
âYouâre at No Fricken Way?â Kai asked.
âThis the shrooms kid?â Goldilocks asked.
âThatâs me.â
âYou got my boards in that hearse?â Goldilocks asked.
âGuess thatâs you behind us,â Kai said.
âFuck you.â Goldilocks hung up.
âItâs him?â Bean gestured at the rearview mirror.
âAppears that way,â said Kai.
âI donât believe this,â Bean moaned.
They were headed down a narrow, winding, tree-lined road. No street lights. Just the thick trunks of trees on both sides. Here and there something streaked in the headlights as a toad hopped away and vanished into the weeds along the sides of the road.
âDonât try to talk me into losing them, okay?â Bean pleaded. âThis ainât the movies. Iâm not into high-speed chases.â
âMy guess is, neither are they,â Kai said.
In the headlights a sign came into view:
PRIVATE ROAD BELLE HARBOR GOLF AND TENNIS CLUB NO TRESPASSING
âCrap,â Bean muttered. âNow what do we do?â
âKeep going,â said Kai.
Ten
T he road was still lined with trees, but instead of weeds and brush, the shoulders were marked with large painted white stones and neatly mowed grass. It was clear theyâd entered the grounds of a private country club. The headlights of the second car lit up the hearseâs side-view mirrors.
âDo we have any idea what weâre doing?â Bean asked.
âNope,â answered Kai.
They bounced over a speed bump, then passed a small, empty guardâs station on the right. It was hard to see in the dark, but there appeared to be an empty parking lot on the left. The road ahead led to a largeclubhouse. On the right were tennis courts.
The second car stayed behind them. Beanâs cell phone rang. Kai looked at the incoming number. âItâs him.â He pressed the phone to his ear. âHey, Albert, enjoying the ride?â
âYouâre trapped,â Goldilocks said.
âHowâs that?â
âThe only way out is the way you came in.â
âThanks for telling me,â Kai said.
âYou ready to get the shit kicked out of you?â
âBy anyone I know?â Kai asked.
âIt ainât gonna be so funny when youâre spitting teeth.â
âHey, thatâs a good line, Albert,â Kai said. âYouâre getting better.â
âIâm gonna enjoy this.â Once again Goldilocks hung up.
âWhatâd he say?â Bean asked nervously.
âHe said heâs gonna enjoy this.â
âEnjoy what?â
âNothing important.â
âWe have to do something, Kai,â Bean said.
âI know.â Kai peered through the windshield. Ahead was the
