Stratford.â
âThatâs Lieutenant Commander Stratford to you,â he grumbled.
âYouâll have to pardon my grandfather,â said another ghost as he joined Quincy and George. âHe talks so much about these old monsters that sometimes I think
heâs
the old monster.â
Another ghost appeared out of nowhere. A woman. And then a little girl came into view.
âThatâs my mother, Mary Stratford, but she likes to be called Lady Stratford,â said Quincy. âAnd my three-year-old sister, Leila.â
Five ghosts in total.
âWeâre so sorry we frightened you,â Lady Stratford said. âBut we were at our witsâ end. When those werewolves destroyed the vase and left such a mess, why, we couldnât help but lash out.â
âThey canât stand messes,â added Quincy.
âBut we never would have hurt you,â Quincyâs father said. âWe were just trying to convince you to leave this house.â
âIt was you in those masks?â I asked.
âYes,â said Quincyâs father.
âI collected those terrifying masks from the island of Bali during a tour with the Royal Navy,â said George. âThey are said to channel the spirit of Rangdaâan evil witch who eats small children. I thought theyâd spook you out of the house good, but here you are now, standing right in front of me.â
âWhy are you still in the house?â Shane asked.
âWe were trapped in the South Wing when the fire started,â said Quincyâs father. âWe think it was the servants.â
âBut there is no South Wing,â Gordon said.
âExactly,â said Quincy.
âWeâre sorry,â I said. âBut I think the old monsters are here to stay. All we can do is ask them to behave. And now that we know youâre here, Iâll ask them to do that.â
âYou might want to cover your mouth when you sneeze,â said George, pointing at Ben. âIt was such a powerful load of snot that it flew through my eyehole and directly into my eye.â
All the ghosts shuddered.
âThey hate bogies, too,â said Quincy. âI once dug one out with my finger, andââ
âQuincy!â Lady Stratford scolded.
âGot it,â said Ben.
Quincy waved as the mysterious figures faded away in front of us.
âUm . . . bye?â said Shane.
Mysterious Gifts
Somehow, Director Z convinced us to help out the next night. I think it was punishment for breaking the vase. After we shuffled around school like zombies for the day, we found ourselves standing at the snowy entrance to Gallow Manor once again.
But something was different.
âWhatâs that noise?â asked Ben.
We all put our ears to the massive wooden door.
âAre the monsters . . . laughing?â Gordon said, flabbergasted.
âThereâs something else,â said Nabila. âScratching and whimpering. It sounds like a puppy.â
She concentrated for a moment.
âAnd a kitten.â
We rang the bell, and soon heard the sound of claws scraping down the hall and toward the door.
The door swung open, and a cute little brown puppy waddled out onto the welcome mat and started nibbling on Shaneâs shoes.
âHey,â Shane said, leaning down and patting the dog, âwhatâs up, dude?â
âI thought your hearing was flawless,â Gordon scolded Nabila. âWhereâs the kitten?â
From the feet of the Nurse who had answered the door, a small black-and-white kitten hissed at the dog.
âFriendly little thing,â said Nabila. âIâm still trying to figure out why my ancestors were so in love with cats.â
Shane shuffled the dog (and us) inside, and the Nurse closed the door.
âWhere did these guys come from?â I asked the Nurse.
âGrigore,â said the Nurse.
âWhy are you back in your old uniform?â Ben
