hallway.
âWhat is it?â asked Gordon, covering his ears.
âItâs got to beââ I said.
âGHOOOOOOOOSTS!â Grigore finished.
The half dozen old monsters in the game room got up as fast as they could, knocking into one another as they shuffled around the shaking room.
âWhy are you guys scared?â asked Gordon. âDidnât Director Z tell you what was going on with our ghost friends?â
The puppy flopped into the room, frightened out of its mind, and right into Nabilaâs arms.
âYip, yip, yip, yip,â it barked.
âGET THAT THING OUT OF MY SIGHT!â A voice rattled our teeth, and Quincyâs father floated into the room.
âVery angry ghost friends,â said Gordon.
âFather! Father, stop!â Quincy yelled as he floated in after his father.
But Quincyâs father didnât stop. He headed right toward Grigore.
âNoooooo!â Grigore cowered in the corner, holding the kitten tightly. âI donât even have any teeth. You vouldnât harm a helpless old vampire vith no teeth, vould you?â
âHelpless old vampire?â huffed Quincyâs father. âYou were the one that brought them into the house. These evil little things.â
The kitten hissed from Grigoreâs arms as Quincyâs father leaned in closer.
The puppy growled in Nabilaâs tight grip.
âWhoa,â she said. âSettle down.â She tried to calm the dog, but it bit her. âOUCH!â
She dropped the yipping puppy, and it scurried out of the room.
âFather,â Quincy tried again. âLeave them alone. Youâre worse than Great-Grandfather.â
âYeah,â I said, moving next to Quincy. âWhatâs the big deal! Itâs just a puppy and a kitten!â
âDonât tell me how to act, boys!â he shouted. âIâm defending our house! Our honor. How dare they bring these creatures into our home . . .â
His ghostly face turned demonic; fangs poked out over his lips, his eyes glowed red, and he roared into Grigoreâs face.
âPlease, sir,â whimpered Grigore. âPlease donât drain me of my juice. Please.â
âHe canât hurt you,â I yelled at Grigore. âHeâs just upset that youâre in his house and you let the dog and cat in.â
âI can most certainly hurt him,â hissed the demon ghost. âI will scare him until heâs demented.â
âToo late,â Gordon said, giggling.
âGentlemen, gentlemen,â Shane said.
He moved between the quaking vampire and the upset ghost. The kitten saw the perfect moment for escape and bolted into the hallway.
âWe can work this out,â Shane said in his calmest Zen master voice. He turned to Quincyâs father with his hands up in surrender.
âI know that youâre upset . . . um . . . ,â he said, âwhatâs your name?â
âRICHARD,â roared the ghost.
âAnd you have every right to let your feelings be known, Richard,â Shane said calmly. âBut Iâd ask that you calm down just a little, otherwise Grigore will only hear that youâre screaming, not that youâre saying something.â
Richard roared again, this time blowing Shaneâs hair back.
âOkay, thank you for listening,â Shane said calmly, and then turned to me.
âRichard, we didnât have time to tell the monsters about you,â I said. âIâm sorry. But we were pretty tired yesterday, thanks to your big show at the PTA meeting.â
âThat was fun,â squealed Quincy.
âHar, har, har,â said Ben.
âGrigore,â I said, âgo find Claudine and Sir Kibblebreath. Iâll have to bring them back to my motherâif it really was the PTA that brought them into the house. They canât stay hereânot if you want to live in this place without being
