light and pointed out that with Kerry Eschelmanâs arm, the team should be a contender anyway.
The Mount Olympus Titans continued their grueling practice sessions, but the excruciating soreness Josh felt in the mornings began to ease up. He stopped taking the little yellow pills and learned to pack his throwing arm in ice every night before bed.
Josh, Jaden, and Benji teamed up for a science posterproject that brought them all together at Joshâs house on a Thursday evening. Joshâs mom made a stir-fry of chicken and vegetables that everyone loved before the three partners spread out their materials on the living-room floor.
âBenji,â Jaden asked, âwhat are you doing?â
Benji sat with his back against the wall, and he looked up from his notebook only after writing something down. His face turned red and he said, âJust a little math.â
âWeâre doing science,â Jaden said. âOur team project?â
âI just figured, while you guys were working out the details, I could get this done,â Benji said. âIâm not a good detail guy. Iâm more of the big-picture type.â
Jaden looked at Josh, appealing for help.
âCome on, man,â Josh said. âWe gotta work together.â
âWell, Iâm a science genius, but this math stuff is killing me,â Benji said, rumpling up his face. âI got a sixty-four right now and if I fail, Iâm off the baseball team. I know that doesnât mean much to a big travel team star like you, but us little people got to eat, too.â
Jaden scooted over next to him and examined his notebook.
âWhereâs your work on this problem?â she asked.
Benji shrugged. âWhat do you mean?â
âYour work,â she said. âThe calculations for the problem. Youâve got the formula right, but the answerâswrong. Where did you do the work?â
Benji crunched his eyebrows and said, âI sit right next to you in math. I see the way you do it, and youâve got, what? A hundred and two average?â
Jaden looked at him, and her face relaxed. She shook her head and softly said, âI think if you just do the work out on paper, youâll be fine. Thereâs a lot of calculations you have to make with this. If you write it down, itâs ten times easier to keep track of. Here, let me show you.â
Benji watched her, nodding his head.
âYeah, I get that, dude,â he said. âJust what I was doing, but in my head.â
âSo,â Jaden said patiently, âif you just write it down like this, I think youâll be golden. The formula is the hardest part, and you got that.â
âYeah,â Benji said, âthat I got. Thatâs the hard part. But I still donât get why I shouldnât do it the same way as you.â
âSheâs smarter than you, meathead,â Josh said. âDonât get mad. Sheâs smarter than me, too.â
âBut she canât swing a bat like me,â Benji said, grinning.
âThatâs why youâre her hero,â Josh said. âNow that youâve solved the meaning of life, can we get back to this poster? I got to get to bed.â
Benji wrinkled his brow and said, âAnyone else tell you this Titans baseball team has turned you into a real bore?â
âTomorrow, Iâm either in or out,â Josh said, âso you might not have to worry about it.â
âWhatâs tomorrow?â Jaden asked.
âWe got a tournament down on Long Island this weekend,â Josh said. âRocky says the team has to be down to eighteen, so somebodyâs got to go.â
âNot you!â Jaden asked.
âIâm the only twelve-year-old.â
âSo what,â Jaden said. âI canât believe youâre not as good as any fourteen-year-old. Youâre as big as most of them, right?â
âKind of.â
âSo?â Jaden
