to be someone else? My husband, perhaps?” Ice dripped from her lips, and Isobel felt herself quake inside. “Or maybe someone else, like the man I saw you talking with down in the lobby.”

Isobel felt herself blush. Why on earth did she feel an immediate sense of guilt? It wasn’t as though she’d done anything wrong. Hell, she hadn’t even known that Marcus was here, and if she had she would have avoided the man like the damn plague.

“I didn’t know who it was, Jessica. I wasn’t expecting to be approached by anyone, least of all you.” Isobel managed to keep the tremor from her voice, but only just.

Jessica gave a tinkling laugh that grated on Isobel’s nerves. “Well of course you weren’t, my dear. But while I’m still married to Tyler, I still own shares in this hotel.” Isobel felt her stomach sink at the words. She’d forgotten all about her shares in the hotel, and it made her wonder just how much she didn’t know about Tyler or his dealings with his wife; business or otherwise.

“Talking of Tyler and while I have your attention, I’d like to make something else very clear also.” Her voice literally sent shivers through Isobel, and not in a good way. “You do realize that you’re nothing but a fling, don’t you?”

She paused, obviously waiting for some kind of reaction from Isobel. But Isobel wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction. Not if she could help it anyway.

“Oh yes, the very fact that he’s brought you here of all places shows me that he’s not serious about divorcing me.” She gave another haughty laugh and Isobel felt as though every nerve-ending was strung as tight as it could possibly be without snapping. “I’m sure he told you that this is where he brought me for our honeymoon?” It was said as a question, but she didn’t wait for an answer.

“We had an absolutely marvelous time here, and what with being owners of the place, nothing was too much trouble. We spent every minute together with nothing and no-one being allowed to interrupt us or intrude on our time together.” She smirked superciliously. “It was always like that whenever we went anywhere. Tyler insisted on being by my side constantly; in and out of the bedroom.”

Isobel felt physically sick. It looked as though things between her and Tyler were a far cry from how they’d been between him and his wife. He hadn’t even seen her inside the hotel before he’d been hurrying off to a damn meeting, leaving her to her own devices.

“Please don’t feel badly, dear. It was only a matter of time before some floozy or other caught his eye. Especially after I told him that I didn’t want to partake in any of his sordid little sex games anymore.” She eyed Isobel up and down. “I’m sure that it’s all very novel to you, having your bottom spanked like a naughty little schoolgirl and being controlled like a plaything by a good looking and extremely wealthy man. But the novelty will soon wear off; I can assure you of that. I talk from experience.”

If Isobel had thought she’d felt sick a few minutes earlier, it was nothing to how she felt now. The fact that Tyler’s wife knew about what went on between them was more than she could stand and she felt her face burn with shame and embarrassment.

But Jessica wasn’t finished rubbing salt in the wounds yet. In fact, it seemed as though she was only just getting warmed up, as her next words cut Isobel to the bone. “If I were you, Isobel, I’d start making some plans for what you’re going to do when Tyler finishes things with you. Because he will, you know. It’s only a matter of time before he realizes exactly how much he has to lose by divorcing me. When it comes down to the wire, if he has to choose between watching his business empire crumble or giving you up, he will choose me and his business every time. You’ll be gone before you blink, and you’d do well to remember that.”
