urging him to trust these people. Why, he didn’t know. Still, he needed information. It was urgent he got in contact with the Citadel on Asmerya. To do that, he needed to find a computer terminal like the one he’d accessed during his interrogation.
Tiaki closed his eyes, calling on his magic; he fought the instant desire to turn around and go to Kiana and Mateo and focused on searching for a computer terminal within the compound. When he located the most likely building where one would be located, he opened his eyes and headed in the direction he’d come from when he’d exited the holding cells.
He almost laughed at the pitiful security they had expected to hold him. He had easily gotten out of the room they’d put him in. Using a simple concealing spell, he’d been able to get past the few guards posted in and around the building. Which amazed him, considering at least one person here knew who and what he was. Ash had to know the kind of power he had at his disposal. He damn sure knew the tellurians had access to the same. Unless Ash was of the same mind as the Citadel and frowned upon enlightening people about the magic slumbering in their planet’s core. Tiaki shook his head and decided not to dwell on Ash’s reasons for refusing to talk about the core magic. He was going to access the databases he’d run across briefly when he’d uploaded the disclosure files to their computer.
Tiaki kept to the path, stepping into the foliage and whispering a concealment spell to keep from being detected when someone came too close. He quickly squashed the thought of asking Kiana for the information he needed. He was certain Mateo would never allow her to give him anything.
At least not without some persuasion.
He almost groaned aloud just thinking of how he’d persuade them. Damn. Could this be the soul bond? If so, this was the worst time to have to deal with it. He’d heard how intense the bonding could be, how it consumed those involved.
The building he’d been seeking came into view. He swept the area to make sure no one was coming. The scent of ripening mangos, bananas, and breadfruit assailed his nose, reminding him of Mākutu. He shoved away the sudden longing to see his home world and approached the door when he sensed it was clear. He wasn’t sure exactly what these soldiers were fighting, but he had caught a reference to the Obsidian Syndicate. The question was whether it was the same Syndicate the Rift Hunters had been fighting in the Phoenix Galaxy. Tiaki studied the lock and keypad on the wall beside the door a moment. Closing his eyes, he let his magic flow through him. It came readily at his command, teasing his nerve endings with tiny electrical currents. He focused it to a pinpoint and allowed it to pour through his fingertips. He guided it to the keypad and felt it snake into the security pad’s memory. After hearing beeping sounds of the code being entered into the system, he had to force his magic to retreat instead of seeking out Kiana and Mateo. He eased the door open, thankful it barely squeaked, and slipped inside.
Pushing aside the desire burning in his blood, Tiaki focused instead on figuring out a way to get back to the Phoenix Galaxy. He turned his senses to finding a terminal he could use to find out more about Earth’s past. When his magic found an open terminal, he moved down the corridor, careful to avoid the areas he sensed people in. He entered the room and sat down.
Cracking into the system was so easy he fought the urge to laugh. While his magic sensed most of the power was supplied by Earth’s core, no other magic was present. In the Phoenix Galaxy, the Rift Hunters wove magic from the planet’s core into the computer code. Doing so gave the ciphers a sentience that would be impossible without it, which in turn made it that much more secure.
It would be some time before they discovered he’d escaped. Tiaki allowed his magic to seep into the computer, which ran at an
