her to spend more time at the gym, start restricting her calories.  Her friends would become nonexistent because his jealousy would run them off.  Well, not Abby.  Abby would stick around no matter what.  Only this time she couldn’t run to Abby to get away.
Yeah, maybe it was better if they just ended this now and never saw one another again.  Her heart constricted at the idea.  She had to stop thinking like this.  Aidan wasn’t anything like Randall.  He had proved that to her repeatedly in his actions, in his words.
She had to stop comparing everything to her past relationship. Such negative influence wasn’t fair to either of them.  It was time to hang up her impediments and give Aidan a chance.  She knew her uncertainties would get in the way on occasion so she would need to be upfront with him when they did.
Resolve back in place, Atayla decided to make a trip to the bathroom to freshen up. Pulling the sheet away from her body, she started to climb out of bed when she noticed movement under the sheet.
She sat there frozen not knowing what the little lump was on the bed next to her.  With a shaky hand, she pulled the sheet back further, revealing a rodent like creature.  Big brown eyes surrounded by cream colored fur stared back at her.  Crying out, she jumped behind Aidan and all but pushed him at the creature.
Aidan startled awake at the sound of Atayla’s distraught yelp.  Opening his eyes, he saw only empty bed in front of him.  He wondered where she had gone until he felt her shove against his back.
He turned towards her and saw tears in her scared eyes.  Reacting quickly, he grabbed her to him and rocked her back and forth as she cried out a sob.  He soothed her as best he was able and petted the back of her head with firm strokes down her hair.
“Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.”  He crooned hurriedly.  “ Shh. It’s okay.  It’s fine.  I’ve got you.”
Resting his cheek against her hair, he was baffled by her current state.  Did she have a nightmare?  He couldn’t think of any other reason for her sudden distress.  Holding her face gently in his palms, he leaned back to look at her.  He swiped her tears away with his thumbs.
“You alright?  Tell me what happened.”
“You have a rat in your house!  It was in bed with us, right next to me!  It scared the shit out of me!”  She lowered her head as another sob escaped.
Oh hell, he should have told her before they went to sleep this morning.
“It wasn’t a rat.”  Aidan said carefully.  When she looked up at him doubtfully, he barked out a laugh.  “I’m sorry, I know it isn’t funny.  It was most likely just Pete.”
Raising a single eyebrow, she asked slowly as though he was mad. “What is Pete?”
“Pete is my ferret.  Actually it is more like I’m Pete’s human.”  He said mockingly. “He was dumped off or lost by his owners.  I don’t know.  Anyway, I came home one evening and the neighbor’s dog had this ferret cornered under my porch.  I crawled in, scooped him up, and he has lived with me ever since.”
The look on her face was one of total disbelief.  Smiling, he continued on.
“He’s actually not all that much trouble.  Sure, he makes nests out of my shoes and steals cookies every once in a while, but he is pretty quiet most of the time.”
Atayla laughed.  He was so sincere about the whole thing she didn’t have any trouble seeing him being led around by the little rodent.
“I’m sure the only reason he was in bed with us is because I forgot to fill his food bowl last night.  It wouldn’t be the first time he woke me up protesting.”
“You don’t put it in a cage?”  She asked indignantly.
“I have a cage, yeah.”  He answered cautiously.  “I put him in there once, but seeing him there locked behind bars made me feel like a horse’s ass.  It was like a miniature prison.  He looked up at me with those humongous sad eyes and I
