wanted to know why.
âIt would be like mixing two entirely different worlds. And I know from experience it doesnât work. People like youââ
âWhat the hell does that mean, âpeople like meâ?â
âPeople with money,â she clarified, drawing the word out like a curse. âYou hired me, Eli, you did not make a social call. This is a business arrangement, thatâs all. Quit trying to make it something more.â
Her insistence only made him more determined. âMaybe it could be something more if youâd let it.â
âFor what purpose?â she almost yelled.
âBecause I want you.â
Her eyes flared, color rushed into her cheeksâanger or embarrassment, he had no idea which. Her chest rose and fell, then her expression settled into lines of rage. As she turned to stalk away, he grabbed her shoulder.
Big mistake.
Within a heartbeat, his thumb was twisted backward at an awkward angle. Eli locked his jaw in serious discomfort. Feeling his own anger erupt, he growled, âLet go, Ray.â
She did, backing up a step and looking very sheepish. âIâm sorry. It was pure instinct.â Then she caught herself and her brows snapped down. âYou shouldnât touch me. Especially not after spewing garbage like that.â
âGarbage?â He rubbed his thumb but it continued to throb.
Going on tiptoe, she stuck her face in his and snarled, âIâm not out for a quick toss in the hay, Eli. Save that for Jane.â Her sneering tone irked him all the more. âJust because I have some unusual habits doesnât mean Iâm easy.â
He wanted to turn her over his knee. His anger had risen until he had to speak through his teeth. âIf you had let me finish instead of being so damned pricklyâ just like a damn womanâ youâd know that wasnât what I meant at all.â He tried shaking his hand, but the pain continued to pulse through his thumb. He glowered at her. âI only meant that I like you and Iâm attracted to you.â
âWhy?â
âWhat do you mean, why? You donât think youâre likable? Hell, Ray, youâre giving me your expertise and assistance, and if thatâs not enoughââ
She curled her hands into fists. Not a good sign. âIâm not giving you anything. Youâre paying good money for it.â
Eli didnât appreciate that little reminder. His expression became stony. âYou didnât have to agree to help. Money or not, you could have said no.â
He tried bending his thumb, and grimaced instead.
Just that easily, Ray relented. Dropping her weight onto one leg, thrusting out the other hip in an arrogant slouch, she said, âHere.â She grabbed his hand, turned his thumb sharply, making him grunt, then asked, âIs that better?â
Strangely enough, it was. Feeling less than pleasant, Eli said, âIâll live, thank you very much.â
She looked at him, shook her head with a short laugh, then attempted to wipe away her grin. âYouâre funny, Eli, you know that?â
âPutting a torque on my thumb amuses you, does it?â
She shrugged, which wasnât much of an encouraging answer. âLook, letâs forget all this nonsense about getting to know each other, okay? We need to concentrate on getting through this job.â Her natural confidence restored, she sauntered lazily toward the door. âIâll shower first, then we can get things going.â
Eli watched her go, but just before she disappeared from sight, she turned to him again. âEli?â
âYeah?â
âThanks.â
In a tone as reverent as her own had been, he asked, âFor what?â
âFor wanting to get to know me. Even though itâs impossible, it was a nice thought.â
She turned again, but Eliâs implacable words stopped her. âLike hell, Ray. It isnât impossible,
