off,â Leigh-Ann said, fumbling with the laces of my sneaker. She put her arm around my waist and helped me hobble to the water trough. âPut your foot in there. Why on earth didnât you tell me?â
âI did,â I said.
âBut why didnât you yell? Or scream? Or something ?â
The other girls gathered around. They all looked concerned.
âYouâre so brave,â Madison said.
âAre you okay?â Jaden said. âYour footâs turning red!â
âCan you wiggle your toes?â Leigh-Ann asked. âIs anything broken?â
I wiggled my toes in the lukewarm water. Everything worked.
âThank goodness,â she said. âBut youâre done for the dayâand next time, if a horse steps on your foot, I want you to do something about it.â She pushed her bangs out of her eyes. âGirls, I need one of you to take Winnie to the cabin. Who wants to go?â
Everyone raised her hand, and a chorus of âMe, me!â filled the air.
âAmanda,â I said.
Amanda stepped forward, proud to be chosen.
âStop by the lodge and have Alice give her some ibuprofen, â Leigh-Ann instructed. Amanda nodded. My foot still throbbed, but it was fun being the patient everyone wanted to take care of.
âThe rest of you, back to your spots,â Leigh-Ann said. âAnd keep your feet out from under your horses!â
Back in the cabin, with my foot propped on a pillow, I let Amanda make a fuss over me.
âEat one of these,â she said, handing me a Mike and Ikeâs HOT TAMALE from the stash in her trunk.
âOoo, spicy,â I said, smushing the candy between my teeth.
âI know Iâm not supposed to have them in the cabinâbut oh well,â she said. She perched on the edge of my bed. âI canât believe you just stood there while Pudding Treat was on your foot. Did it kill?â
âUh-huh,â I said. âBut I was too embarrassed.â
âI would have been screaming my head off,â she said. She shook another handful of HOT TAMALES into my hand. Her expression told me she was going to change the subject. âSo . . . who do you thinkâs going to be Miss Hummingbird?â
Miss Hummingbird was like the most popular girl of all the Hummingbirds. Thereâd also be a Miss Chickadee and a Miss Peregrine. All the cabins voted, and the winners would be announced on the last day of camp.
âI donât know,â I said. âMaybe Jessica?â Jessica was the red-haired girl who was so clearly Amyâs favorite. I watched Amandaâs face and quickly added, âOr you? Maybe you, I bet!â
âNo, not me,â Amanda said. âI think itâll be you.â
âHa ha,â I said.
âNo, seriously,â she said. âEverybody loves you. Itâs so weird.â
âHey, now!â I couldnât decide whether to be thrilled at the compliment or put off by Amandaâs qualification. I laughed.
âYou know what I mean,â Amanda said.
âNot really,â I said.
Amanda shrugged. âYouâre different here at camp. I donât know why, but you are.â
So she had noticed. I had wondered.
âI donât know why, either,â I said. âI guess it is sort of weird.â
âGood weird, though.â She shook out the last three HOT TAMALES and gave one to me and popped the other two into her mouth. âAre you glad you came?â
âI am completely and totally glad I came,â I said. âAre you?â
âThat I came, or that you did?â she asked.
I kicked her with my good foot.
âBoth,â she said. âIâm glad of both.â
On the last day of campâor rather the last full day, since the next day our parents would come pick us upâI stood up to the cheers of my cabin as I was proclaimed Miss Hummingbird. Amanda clapped loudest of all. I walked with Miss Chickadee and
