my idea of fun in the sun and right about now, I wished that I had never met Evian Javid. The last thing I wanted to do was spend my time racing around this island trying to find her. Shay had seemed just as shocked when Iâd told her Carson was a phony and that had only made us all worry more. So, weâd spent the last three hours combing every hotel looking for her, Carson, or any information.
âI think weâve done all we can do,â I finally told Shay. The sun was setting and we had literally lost a whole day behind this mess. âLetâs just head back to the hotel.â
Shay looked defeated but didnât fight me, thank goodness.
âIâm especially worried because we were supposed to take our spring break senior picture at the breakfast this morning and she didnât show up. Evian wouldnât miss that picture,â Shay said as she, Sheridan, and I made our way back to our hotel. Quincy was lurking in the background. He really was good at his job because Iâd almost forgotten that heâd been trailing us. Suddenly, I remembered that Iâd missed the picture, too, which only made me more aggravated.
But on top of my anger, I was actually getting a little nervous now, too, but what could we do?
âIâm going to go back to my room,â Shay said. âMaybe Evian left a message or something.â
I didnât know what to say so I just followed her inside. I was going to go to my room and change. I felt all sticky and nasty now that I had been traipsing all over looking for Evian.
We had just stepped on the elevator when Shayâs phone beeped, signaling an incoming text. âMaybe thatâs Evian,â she said, scrambling to get the purse out of her back pocket.
Her mouth dropped open in horror as she read.
âWhat? What does it say?â Sheridan asked.
â âWe have your girl,â â Shay read. â âWe will call in one hour for further instructions. No cops.â â
âOMG,â Sheridan said. âIs that a ransom text?â
âThatâs what it looks like,â Shay replied. She was shaking like she was terrified. âEvian mustâve given them my number.â
I shook my head. I couldnât believe this.
âOh my God.â Shay fell back against the wall of the elevator. âSo somebody does have her.â
âMaybe somebodyâs just playing a joke.â Thatâs the only thing I could think to say.
Shay shook the phone at me. âDoes this look like a joke to you?â she said.
âOkay,â Sheridan added. âIâm getting a little nervous myself.â
I know I probably shouldâve been the one trying to calm them down, but I needed someone to calm me down.
âSo, what are we going to do?â Sheridan asked. I still couldnât figure out how this had become a we project.
âWeâre all going to go to my room and wait on that phone call,â Shay said. âThe good news is if she gave them my number, that means sheâs still alive.â
âSee, all this talk about ransom and dead or alive is way above my pay grade,â I said, repeating something Iâd heard someone on TV once say. âWe need to call the police.â
âNo!â Shay said, pointing the phone at me. âYou see they said no cops.â
âCanât you just call us and tell us what they say?â I replied. I didnât scare easy, but this was definitely making me uneasy.
âNo, weâre all in this together,â Shay snapped.
I really wanted to remind her that Evian wasnât my friend anymore. That was her girl. Therefore, this was her problem.
But if I was being truthful, I knew that the only reason she had taken the dare was because of me, and the last thing I wanted was to have to explain to her family what role Iâd played in her disappearance. No, we just needed to find her.
âFine,â I said, motioning
