for Shay to get off the elevator when the doors opened on her floor. âWeâll go to your room and wait on the call.â
Sheridan looked like she wanted to protest, but she followed anyway. Inside, Shayâs room was eerily quiet as we waited for the phone to ring.
After about fifty minutes, Shay stood. âWe got ten minutes. Iâm gonna use the restroom real quick.â
None of us said a word as she dashed off. I just wanted this all to be over.
Not two minutes after the bathroom door closed, her cell phone rang.
âShay!â I yelled.
âIâm coming! Answer it!â I heard the toilet flush.
I pressed the button for the speaker phone.
âHello,â I said.
âAre these the rich girlâs friends?â the voice said.
âYes,â I replied, willing Shay to hurry up and get her butt out here. I felt a sigh of relief as the door opened and Shay came running out.
âIâm gonna need five hundred thousand dollars if you wanna see your girl alive again,â the raspy voice said.
Five hundred thousand dollars? Was he crazy? I didnât need to see Evian alive again.
âHere, itâs for you,â I told Shay as I handed her the phone. She looked confused as she held the phone.
âYeah,â Shay began.
âDid you hear what I said?â the man repeated.
âYeah, but um, where are we supposed to get that kind of money from?â
Sheridan stood and watched in shock. Me, I was easing toward the door.
âFind a way,â the man said. âOr find your friendâs body. Iâll be in touch in twenty-four hours.â
The line went dead with Shay standing there, holding the phone. Finally, she looked at me and Sheridan and said, âWe have to come up with five hundred thousand dollars.â
â We donât have to do anything,â I said.
âYou know what? Iâm tired of doing this with you,â Shay said. She picked up the hotel phone, pressed zero, and then said, âYes, Iâd like to place a collect call to Miami, Florida.â
âWho are you calling?â I asked.
âIâm calling Evianâs brother,â Shay said. âWhatâs his name? Clinton? Iâm sure him and his mafia friends can get over here and help us.â
Sheridan raced over to the phone, then put her hand on the button to hang the phone up. âBut I thought you said they were going to blame us,â she said, panicked.
âTheyâre not going to blame us,â Shay replied, motioning between her and Sheridan. âTheyâre going to blame her. â She pointed at me. âSheâs the one that dared Evian to go with that guy. Sheâs the one that introduced everyone to Carson.â
âFine,â I huffed. This was wrong on so many levels. But I knew that Shay was right. âSo, weâre just supposed to give these people five hundred thousand dollars? Where are we supposed to get five hundred thousand dollars from?â
âI donât know,â Shay replied. âCall your dad.â
âYou call your dad,â I said. Shay might not have been as rich as me, but they were still loaded. Her father probably wore five hundred thousand dollarsâ worth of jewelry around his neck.
âBetween us, weâre going to have to come up with the money,â Shay said.
âLetâs not and say we did,â I replied. âLetâs just call the cops and when itâs time to give them the money, the police can bust the crooks, we get Evian back, and we take our happy behinds home.â
âYeah, if only it was that easy,â Shay replied.
âAll I know is that I didnât sign up for all of this,â I snapped.
âAnd you think I did?â Shay said. âYou think Evian did?â
I exchanged glances with Sheridan before saying, âOkay, fine. Let me go back to my room and make some calls and see how much I can come up with. You do the
