mind.
His thumb presses into the cleft of my chin to turn it toward him. “Please don’t look away. I want to tell you something.”
“OK.”
“When you were in my office today, asking about the files, I wasn’t thinking about her.”
“Everett, you don’t have to say that. I saw it all over your face.”
“No, you didn’ t, and are you capable of listening?”
“Sorry.”
“I was remembering how useless I was to Casteel for months. I feel guilty about it to this day, but I didn’t think of her.”
“ You weren’t granted a divorce, so I know you love her and miss her, and I shouldn’t have let it get to me. We’re having fun and that’s that.”
I lightly smack his chest and drop down to his side , scooting my body against him. This conversation isn’t necessary, so we need to end it. Everett kisses the top of my head.
“Tell me what made you this strong and independen t,” he says as his fingers graze down my arm. I notice the tent over his erection rising, and it has my body heating again.
“My dad was hard-working, and even though my mother stayed home to raise us, she worked hard, too, but I always wondered what she would have done if she didn’t have my dad ’s income.
“I decided at a young age that even if I ever had kids and stayed home with them, I’d be able to support myself if the need arose. I’m not sure why, but I obsessed over it until my parents were financially set.”
“Do you ever get help from anyone?”
“Nope.”
“Let me guess. You used to split rent with your ex.”
“Um, yeah, but I see nothing wrong with that. He wasn’t put on this earth to support me.”
“Why didn’t you combine your money?”
“Why are we even discussing this?”
Everett swiftly rolls me to my back and is on top of me. His erection is probing against my leg, lengthening as he studies me.
“You don’t trust easily, and I don’t think your mother not working is the reas on why. We need to know each other better, and I need your trust in order for us to share the sexual experiences I have in mind.”
“What the hell do you want to do to me? You’re not walking me around by a collar.”
Everett chuckles hard, his superb, iron body bouncing against me.
“Where in the hell did that idea come from? Hmm … maybe you will teach me a thing or two.”
Chapter Eleven
Everett
After a second round of sex with Reese, I reluctantly went home last night. She didn’t ask me to stay or I would’ve. I believe she was tuckered out, and I think she’s trying not to get too close.
I don’t like it. If she’s only going to be in my life for two months, then there isn’t time for her to hold back. We’re making the most of this.
Glancing at the clock, I notice she should be here by now, so I go into her off ice and shut the door. She tilts her head and gives me a look.
“Again? You think I don’t listen , but obviously you didn’t regard what I said yesterday.”
“Oh, I heard, but I’m not staying away from you here ,” I say.
She brings her eyebrows together, the crease deepening across her forehead.
“It was condition two, and you don’t see me begging you to touch me.”
“ Yet , fancy face.”
A smile breaks through, showcasing her sparkling whites. “You’re impossible.”
“And you’re irresistible, so I’m getting a damn kiss.” I reach behind me and lock the door like I did yesterday.
“We have to be quieter in here, Everett. We already know you can hear through these walls.”
An unpleasant feeling churns in my gut. It’s regret. I wish more than anything that Reese hadn’t overheard my conversation with Sarge.
“What’s wrong?” she asks.
“Um, nothing. Go to lunch with me.”
“W on’t the guys wonder why we’re going?”
“I don’t give a flying fuck what any of them think about it.”
“But I do. Remember?” She stands, and those eyebrows of hers are about to reach the peak of her forehead as her fists rest against her
