"Yes." I'm shy about this answer only because I don't want her to judge me for it.
"Then...then that's all that matters I guess." She squeezes my arm again, but continues to look intently at me. "I had a guy I dated for a while...it was before I knew you. He was kinda like that. I think about him sometimes still..."
"What happened with him...?" Laura hasn't really told me much about previous guys. I know she broke things off with Tad. She said he just wasn't right for her, even though he made her laugh a lot.
"It was college...he switched majors and schools. He tried to get me to go with him, but my folks couldn't afford out of state tuition. We stayed in touch for a while, but we just drifted apart..." She shrugs, "But stupidly I've compared other guys to him since then...if they aren't that into me like he was..." She shrugs again.
"I don't think that's stupid...you know what you want and you're not willing to settle that's all." I pour more wine for us both.
"And is Max what you want?"
"Yes." This time I'm smiling. "I've never known anyone like him before...but he's what I've always wanted that's for sure."
"Good." She's smiling too. "And you said he has a brother...?" She's giggling. I push her shoulder and we both start laughing again.
Chapter 7 HIM
"So...are you going to make good on our deal or what?" We're standing outside the bar, getting away from all the party fun for a moment. Dan went crazy planning this thing. Strippers of every shape and rainbow have been dancing around for the last hour. I laughed at the first couple, but now it's just overkill. "And when are you going to quit smoking?!" I wave away some smoke moving on the air towards me.
"I'm working on it...both those things!" Mike blows more smoke straight up into the air and laughs. "I swear you just proposed so quick to make me look bad!"
Dan joins us, taking a hit off of Mike's cigarette. Dan thinks it's okay to smoke as long as he didn't buy it. We all know that Becca wouldn't agree with him. "Yeah...he's getting married, so you'll have to propose to Stephie finally...that sounds like Max!"
I give Dan a nod back towards the door and he questions with his brows for a second. He finally gets it and just turns to walk back into the bar.
"Mike. There's something that I've been wanting to talk to you about."
Mike smiles, "Let me guess...I'm not the best best-man right?"
I laugh. "I have to give that to my brother...you and Dan are both best-men though!" I clap him on the shoulder. "No...I need to talk to you about the wedding. Well, about Lucy and me."
He doesn't say anything, just snubs out his cigarette on the ground and turns to face me more. "I had this talk with Dan already...that night Jake split with Julia. But I haven't really had a chance to talk to you..."
"Ok...you got my curiosity going..."
"It's about the type of relationship I have with Lucy...the type of marriage I'll have with her." I pause just to see if he's going to make some joke, but he seems to pick up that I need him to be serious for a moment. "I know you know that my Dad was strict with Jake and me." He nods his head like this is an understatement. "Yeah. It was his way or no way growing up and we all toed the line. That included my Mom." His expression doesn't change. "And I am the same way with Lucy."
His expression turns funny, like I just made a joke that he doesn't quite get yet. "Are you into some sort of bondage sm thing...cuz I can recommend a few clubs in the area if you are...?” He laughs, but I've known him long enough to see that he's serious too.
