expect to see stepped out of the darkness. “Nadia, what are you doing here?”
Chapter 16
Nadia smirked, flashing her fangs. “Just waiting for you to arrive.”
“There is nothing for you here, leave,” Xavier snarled.
“Oh, but I think there is,” she purred, coming closer to him. “Seeing as how you’re looking for a mate.”
“You’re the one that contacted Ares about Charise.”
“We’ve worked together many times over the years. It wasn’t very hard to look him up and tell him about his little mate to be shacking up with you.” She smiled at him. “Now you are mine.”
Xavier growled. “You are one insane bitch. How did I not see it? Everyone else did, including Charise. Hell, this is just like with Rachel.”
“Funny you should mention that bitch. Guess who Ares’ true mate was?”
He looked at her and saw the truth in her eyes. “He went insane when she died.”
“It’s more complicated than that. She didn’t want your packaged deal but she didn’t want a filthy bear either. Ares couldn’t stand the rejection and killed her.” Nadia held up a dart gun. “I’m going to take a page out of his book and try it his way. You either become my mate or you get to try this lovely little concoction that my boys whipped up for me.”
“You’re just like him. Completely insane,” he growled, charging towards her.
The dart gun jerked in her hand and Xavier felt a white hot pain in his thigh. Roaring he continued towards her. His vision swam and his legs collapsed.
Charise charged into the living room, Xander and Xerxes hot on her heels. “What have you done?” she roared, stalking towards Nadia.
“You’re supposed to be gone!” Nadia shrieked as she backed away from Charise.
“You guessed wrong bitch!” Charise roared, quickly shifting into her bear and charged Nadia’s retreating form. She chased Nadia to the treeline, stopping when Xander yelled for her to come back.
She shifted back and raced to the house. “What’s wrong?”
Xerxes looked up from his brother’s prone form. “He isn’t responding and I don’t recognize the smell of what was in the dart. Do you?” He passed her the dart and after a quick sniff, she shook her head. “We need a healer as fast as we can. Xander, call Acacia and have her get here ASAP, then call Graeme and apprise him of the situation.”
Charise picked up Xavier’s hand. “Please wake up. We’re getting you a healer.”
Xander walked back into the room. “Graeme and Acacia are on their way as fast as they can.”
Xavier suddenly jerked and convulsed. Xerxes held him down. “He’s having some kind of reaction to whatever she gave him. Help me hold him. We don’t need him hurting himself.” Xander dropped to his knees and helped as much as he could.
Charise leaned down and whispered in his ear. “I just found you. Please don’t leave me. I need you. I love you.”
She watched as he spasmed for several more minutes before finally going still. She looked up and Xerxes. “What happened?”
“I don’t know.” He checked for a pulse and quickly started doing chest compressions. “I can’t find a pulse.”
Charise whimpered. “No…”
Xander growled as they heard several cars doors closing and feet pounding up the front porch. Acacia and Graeme burst into the living room followed by the few other members of their pride.
“Tell me what happened,” Acacia said, opening her medical bag.
“Nadia shot him full of some unknown drug. None of us recognize it,” Charise replied.
Acacia picked up the discarded dart and sniffed at it. “I’ve never come across this before.” She handed it to Graeme. “Have you?” The process was quickly repeated until the entire pride had checked out the dart. “Without knowing what was given to him there isn’t much I can do but try and make him comfortable.” She pulled a dark glass bottle out of her bag. “I’m going to give him some calendula tonic to help with fight
