was a plump woman by the name of Maria. She fixed him five eggs with strips of bacon and toast and put on a fresh pot of coffee.
Six cups later Fargo felt half human. He was still sluggish, though, and that could cost him at the card table. It would be nice if Deerforth was willing to postpone the tournament a day but that wouldnât happen. Another of the rules was that the games wouldnât be delayed for any reason whatsoever. He was almost done when someone came skipping and humming down the hall and grinned in delight at seeing him.
âSkye! Good morning.â
Roselyn hugged him and went over to the cook and hugged her and kissed her on the cheek. The girl wore a gorgeous white dress with a lot of bows and frills that made her look younger than she was. She had on matching white shoes. âIsnât it a beautiful morning?â
âIf you say so,â Fargo said.
âMy, arenât you the grumpy drawers?â Roselyn laughed. âWhy arenât you more happy? Today you could win my fatherâs tournament and have all that money.â
âYou didnât hear about last night?â
Roselyn had accepted a glass of orange juice from Maria and was about to take a sip. She stopped, and lost her smile. âOh. Thatâs right. But you killed him. Arenât you safe now?â
âThereâs another one running around somewhere,â Fargo reminded her. âThe one who peeked in your room.â
âOh,â Roselyn repeated, and frowned. âWell, now youâve spoiled my good mood.â
âYou be careful until I can get to the bottom of this,â Fargo advised.
âDo you think you can?â
âOnly a matter of time.â Fargo noticed that Virginia had come in and was listening, her face as pale as the night before. âMorning.â
âMother!â Roselyn exclaimed, and gave Ginny a hug and a kiss, too.
âI wish we wouldnât discuss that terrible business so early in the day,â Ginny said. âMy constitution canât take it.â
âDoesnât help to bury our heads in the sand,â Fargo said. âThings like this donât go away on their own.â
âWhy wouldnât it?â Ginny said. âYou killed one of them. Maybe theyâll give up.â
Fargo took a swallow of coffee. He had been thinking about it, and he disagreed. âTheyâve been after me for days. Whatever theyâre up to, itâs important enough that they snuck into your home when it was full of guests and tried to make worm food of me. They wonât give up.â
âYou think you know what theyâre up to?â
âI didnât say that,â Fargo said. âBut whatever it is, they made the biggest mistake they could.â
âWhich was?â
âI donât take kindly to someone trying to stick a knife in me. Iâm going to find out who is behind this and repay the favor.â
âThatâs terribly brutal of you.â
âAnd what do you call the bastard who tried to knife me? He was no daisy.â
âPlease, Skye, my daughter is present. Your language, if you donât mind.â
âHell,â Fargo said.
âIâd like to know what those men are up to, too,â Roselyn said. âWhy in the world was one of them looking in my window? It makes no sense.â
âIt makes sense to them,â Fargo said.
Ginny closed her eyes and put a hand to her forehead. âI never counted on anything like this in my life.â
âWho ever does?â Fargo said.
âI see your point. I have everything a person could ask for. A fine home, a child I adore, a husband who is devoted to us, and now this.â
Fargo didnât think she saw the point at all but he didnât say so.
Ginny shook herself. âWell, today is the big day. By this time tonight maybe it will all be sorted out.â
âI doubt it,â Fargo said. âI have a lot
