was a plump woman by the name of Maria. She fixed him five eggs with strips of bacon and toast and put on a fresh pot of coffee.
Six cups later Fargo felt half human. He was still sluggish, though, and that could cost him at the card table. It would be nice if Deerforth was willing to postpone the tournament a day but that wouldn’t happen. Another of the rules was that the games wouldn’t be delayed for any reason whatsoever. He was almost done when someone came skipping and humming down the hall and grinned in delight at seeing him.
    â€œSkye! Good morning.”
Roselyn hugged him and went over to the cook and hugged her and kissed her on the cheek. The girl wore a gorgeous white dress with a lot of bows and frills that made her look younger than she was. She had on matching white shoes. “Isn’t it a beautiful morning?”
â€œIf you say so,” Fargo said.
â€œMy, aren’t you the grumpy drawers?” Roselyn laughed. “Why aren’t you more happy? Today you could win my father’s tournament and have all that money.”
â€œYou didn’t hear about last night?”
Roselyn had accepted a glass of orange juice from Maria and was about to take a sip. She stopped, and lost her smile. “Oh. That’s right. But you killed him. Aren’t you safe now?”
â€œThere’s another one running around somewhere,” Fargo reminded her. “The one who peeked in your room.”
â€œOh,” Roselyn repeated, and frowned. “Well, now you’ve spoiled my good mood.”
â€œYou be careful until I can get to the bottom of this,” Fargo advised.
    â€œDo you think you can?”
â€œOnly a matter of time.” Fargo noticed that Virginia had come in and was listening, her face as pale as the night before. “Morning.”
â€œMother!” Roselyn exclaimed, and gave Ginny a hug and a kiss, too.
â€œI wish we wouldn’t discuss that terrible business so early in the day,” Ginny said. “My constitution can’t take it.”
â€œDoesn’t help to bury our heads in the sand,” Fargo said. “Things like this don’t go away on their own.”
â€œWhy wouldn’t it?” Ginny said. “You killed one of them. Maybe they’ll give up.”
Fargo took a swallow of coffee. He had been thinking about it, and he disagreed. “They’ve been after me for days. Whatever they’re up to, it’s important enough that they snuck into your home when it was full of guests and tried to make worm food of me. They won’t give up.”
â€œYou think you know what they’re up to?”
â€œI didn’t say that,” Fargo said. “But whatever it is, they made the biggest mistake they could.”
    â€œWhich was?”
â€œI don’t take kindly to someone trying to stick a knife in me. I’m going to find out who is behind this and repay the favor.”
    â€œThat’s terribly brutal of you.”
â€œAnd what do you call the bastard who tried to knife me? He was no daisy.”
â€œPlease, Skye, my daughter is present. Your language, if you don’t mind.”
    â€œHell,” Fargo said.
â€œI’d like to know what those men are up to, too,” Roselyn said. “Why in the world was one of them looking in my window? It makes no sense.”
â€œIt makes sense to them,” Fargo said.
Ginny closed her eyes and put a hand to her forehead. “I never counted on anything like this in my life.”
    â€œWho ever does?” Fargo said.
â€œI see your point. I have everything a person could ask for. A fine home, a child I adore, a husband who is devoted to us, and now this.”
Fargo didn’t think she saw the point at all but he didn’t say so.
Ginny shook herself. “Well, today is the big day. By this time tonight maybe it will all be sorted out.”
â€œI doubt it,” Fargo said. “I have a lot
