and inconspicuous as possible. She went into her room and logged on, aware that she still hadn’t finished the work Daniel had set her.
Getting stuck into putting the finishing touches to a report Madeline was dying for a coffee but didn’t want to get caught up in conversation with anyone in the kitchen. She held out for another half an hour when her thirst got the better of her and she quickly went into the kitchen. She spotted Daniel talking to one of the brokers across the floor. He didn’t see her and she was happy to keep her distance for now, not sure what his intentions toward her really were, whether it was a one-off or something else. Had he given her any impression that it was to continue? As she had ridden home in the car last night, the after-glow that had surrounded her had been replaced by thoughts that he had just used her. He hadn’t asked her to stay the night, despite the late hour. He had used her sexually and though she had never had an experience like it, at the end of the night he had dismissed her and sent her away.  She had seen him with that other woman, the cavalier way that he had treated her led her to believe she was just one of his long line of conquests, or perhaps he would expect her to be some kind of casual hook up. She knew he could get any woman he wanted. She couldn’t do that. She wasn’t like that. She believed in monogamy and loyalty.
She turned her head away from him at the thought of it.
She went back inside her office feeling like shit at the reality of it all, so stupidly letting him. What the hell had happened to her? The very reason she was here forgotten.
She picked back up her glasses and carried on with her work, remaining undisturbed until several hours later, when Daniel walked in without knocking.
“You were very late this morning.”
“Yes.” She didn’t look up, carried on with her work.
“Look at me when I am talking to you.”
She put her pen down and looked up at him.
“Care to tell me what is wrong?”
“Nothing.” She raised her eyebrows to emphasise her statement.
    “Stand up.”
    “I’m busy.”
“My God woman; did I not get through to you at all last night?”
“I’m not someone you can use. I’m your employee, so let’s just keep it at that.” She hadn’t planned what she would say, it just came out.
“You seem to have completely ignored everything I said to you last night.” He could not have felt more angry by her comment. “If you’re going to continue to be my employee then I suggest you do as I told you and go and buy those stockings that I clearly told you to buy and wear, or do I need to amend that into your contract of employment?” His face was ice cold.
He reached into the inner pocket of his jacket and pulled out his wallet. Taking money from it he held it out for her.
    “Now, Madeline.”
“This is the twenty first century if you hadn’t noticed! I’m not your courtesan.”
“I’m surprised you know the term Madeline, according to you, you barely scrapped through an education. I expect you to buy a variety; you will need several if you are to wear them everyday. Select the best quality.”
She got up and snatched the money from his hand, knowing him well enough now to know that he would not back down, and despite everything she had said to herself all afternoon deep down she was excited by his proposal. But she refused to show it.
“Oh, and Madeline.” He said to her as she reached the door to leave, “No-one suggested you were merely a conquest. I propose you get that thought out of your head whilst you are out.”

He had sounded furious with her, and though she was too proud to turn around and face him, what he had said stayed with her all the way to the department store and back. Her heart was deliriously happy. Everything she had thought all morning vanished from her mind.
When she returned, Daniel had gone to a meeting. She went into the ladies bathroom, carrying the new lingerie
