brave.
Maybe some sexy lingerie. Something flirtatious. Except flirting wasnât necessary because they were in agreement about what was going to happen. So that was a bad idea even if she had a qualifying outfit. Which she didnât. There hadnât been a flirtatious or lingerie-worthy man since Nick.
That left her two choices: the frumpy robe over her underwear or a T-shirt and sweatpants. The former would be convenient, but she opted for number two. Practical reasons. Eleven hours had passed since heâd read her ovulation alert and he might have changed his mind. If so, being dressed was far less humiliating.
After pulling a red and white Runninâ Rebels shirt over her head and slipping on a pair of black sweatpants, she checked her hair, brushed her teeth and dabbed perfume behind her ears and on her wrists.
âBreak a leg,â she said to her reflection in the mirror.
Just as she hit the bottom stair, the front door opened and there was Nick. He had a bouquet of flowers in one hand, a bag and bottle of wine in the other. Just a guess, but it didnât look like heâd changed his mind.
âHi,â she said, heart thumping as she met him in the entryway.
He held out the flowers. âFor you.â
âThanks. You really didnât have to.â
âI know. Itâs nothing fancy.â He put the pink carnations wrapped in green cellophane in her arms.
Her heart thumped a little harder and she went all gooeyinside. How sweet was this? If only heâd made a single similar gesture when they were married, the marriage might have survived. Leaving had been the hardest thing sheâd ever done and one look at Nick reminded her why.
In his old brown leather jacket, cotton shirt and jeans, he couldnât possibly look more dashing, more masculine, more handsome. That attitude and his smile had swept her off her feet before, but this time she was in full control of her heart.
âYouâre very sweet,â she said, burying her nose in the fragrant flowers.
âRemember that when youâre poring over project proposals and trying to decide which kids program to fund.â
She arched an eyebrow. âSo, this is a bribe?â
âActually I just thought of it. But, all causes being equal, how can you turn down the guy who brought you flowers?â
âIâll take that under advisement.â She looked at him and wished she could get a grip on her nerves. Facing down billionaire Las Vegas businessmen hadnât rattled her like this. âRight now Iâm going to put these in water. Do you have a vase?â
âNot that I know of.â He went to the kitchen cupboard and pulled out a white plastic pitcher from the top shelf, a place way beyond her reach. âHow about this?â
âThat will work.â Grateful to have something to keep her hands busy, she filled it with water, then unwrapped the flowers and put them in. She moved the arrangement to the center of the island and said, âPretty.â
Nick set down the bag and pulled out âto goâ boxes. âI stopped at Perettiâs for a bottle of wine and appetizers.â
She stared at him. This wasnât exactly a recreation of their first date. But sort of. The same food followed by thesame physical activity. The difference was that this time she knew exactly what she was doing. Sort of.
Again her heart thumped. He looked so cute, so appealing. The effort heâd made was incredibly sweet, but for reasons she didnât understand, that kicked up her nerves even more, into the reddest of red-alert zones.
What now? Food, wine, bed? Or bed, food, wine? Would they even want to eat afterward? Or would they retire to their respective corners? Should she make the first move? If so, what would that move be?
She leaned a hip against the island and folded her arms over her chest. âHow was your day? Was there a lot to do after the weekend? I guess not.
