no failure. You said it yourself: Susan needed to learn to love. It was your open heart that brought out that love. Thatâs the most important thing a fairy godmother could ever do. Failure? Maybelleâyouâre a smashing success!â
Maybelle blinked in astonishment. âLove, huh? Gee, thatâs pretty classy.â
âIt beats the heck out of magic apples,â said Mr. Peters.
Edna, who was standing behind Maybelle, began to sniffle.
Maybelle turned around. âWhy Edna,â she said. âWhatâs the matter?â
âIâm so embarrassed!â wailed the tall fairy godmother. âMr. Peters has seen what Iâve done!â
âWhat did you do?â asked Maybelle, genuinely puzzled.
âI fell in love!â
âOh, that,â said Maybelle, waving her hand as if shaking something away. âYou should never be embarrassed about loving someone.â
Mr. Peters nodded. âWell put, Maybelle. Sheâs right, Edna. You mustnât be embarrassed about loving someone.â
âBut the rulesâ¦â sniffed Edna.
âAre made to be broken,â said Mr. Peters. âAs in this case. The being you fell in love with is not a human but an immortal. Therefore, you can still live in the blue.â
âWonderful!â said Maybelle.
âWhat about Zozmagog?â asked Edna, putting a protective hand on his shoulder.
Mr. Peters smiled. âHe comes, too. But Iâll warn you, heâs going to have to earn his way.â
âHow can I do that?â asked Zozmagog.
âI want you and Edna to start a school to train fairy godmothers. You should be very useful, Zozmagog; you can teach the trainees about some of the dirty tricks they can expect to face from imps.â He stooped to pick up Maybelleâs wand. âTricks like sabotaged magic wands.â
âWhy you little devil!â said Maybelle.
Out of habit, Zozmagog looked around, looking for someone else to blame. When he realized that wasnât possible, he said softly, âSorry about that, Maybelle.â
âNow,â said Mr. Peters, âI think itâs time we headed for home.â
âNot yet,â said Edna. âThereâs one more thing, and I want to do it now, before we go.â Turning to Maybelle, Edna lifted the Fairy Godmother of the Year medallion from around her own neck. âHere, Maybelle,â she said gently. âI think you should have this.â
âThe Fairy Godmother of the Year award! Oh, no, Edna. I couldnâtââ
âTake it, Maybelle,â said Mr. Peters gently. âYouâve earned it.â
âGosh,â said Maybelle, as Edna placed the medallion around her neck.
âOh, Maybelle!â cried Susan. âIâm so happy for you.â She threw her arms around Maybelle and gave her a hug. âOnlyâwill I ever see you again?â
Maybelle smiled sadly. âI donât think so, dear. After all, you donât really need me anymore.â
âButâ¦â
âBut thereâs one thing you need to know. I really do like you. A lot! And Iâll be watching over you.â
Susan smiled.
âCome along, Maybelle,â said Mr. Peters. âItâs time for us to be going.â
âHey, what about me?â cried Zitzel.
âCan he come with us?â asked Zozmagog.
âAre you kidding?â cried Zitzel. âIâd be bored silly. And Iâm silly enough as it is.â
âCan he stay with us?â asked Susan, turning to her mother. âHeâs kind of cute.â
âOh, Susan, really, I donât thinkââ
âBut Mother,â said Susan, âcharity begins at home.â
âI donât eat much,â added Zitzel.
âBut think of all the trouble,â said Mr. Pfenstermacher.
âI prefer mischief to trouble,â said Zitzel, trying to look innocent. âBesides, I would protect the
