how wonderful!â
âOh, be quiet!â snapped Edna. âDonât you realize we wonât be welcome anywhere now, Above or Below?â She sighed. âOh, I will miss heaven.â
âWhatâs it like?â asked Zozmagog. âI never got to see it, you know.â
âItâs⦠itâs⦠well, itâs heavenly,â said Edna.
âIt sure is,â said Maybelle. âWeâve got choirs of angels, and troops of clowns. Music, light, and laughter all day long. Nectar dripping right out of the vine. And the dancing! Oh, I do love dancing on those golden streets of ours.â
She fluttered into the air and began to do a little polka.
âAnd the Pearly Gates,â sighed Edna. âYou can see them shining in the dark no matter where you are.â She sniffed sadly. âI will miss it up there, Maybelle.â
Zozmagog sighed. âI canât let you give up all that for me, my darling little pookie-kumquat.â
âI donât have any choice,â said Edna. âBesides, you should have been there to begin with, and itâs my fault youâre not.â Straightening her shoulders, she said, âWeâll just have to make a little bit of heaven here on earth.â
âBoy,â Maybelle muttered to Dr. Dekter. âSheâs as gone as he is.â
âYes,â said the doctor. âAnd itâs all very sweet. But youâve got another problem right now.â
âLike what?â
âLike a village full of angry parents!â he said, pointing toward the forest.
Even as he spoke, most of the population of the village came pouring out of the woods. The parents had their children firmly in tow, carrying them over their shoulders or pulling them along by their ears. The children were screaming and squalling, kicking and shouting.
âLet me go!â screeched Susan. âLet me go!â
âLook!â cried a woman at the front of the crowd. âThere she is!â
She was pointing at Edna.
âI saw her waving a wand over the children,â continued the woman. âSheâs the witch who caused all this!â
âWitch?â said Edna in disbelief.
âAnd that other woman is her helper!â shouted Susanâs mother. âThey came to my house yesterday and persuaded me to send Susan into the woods. Thatâs when she changed. They must have cast an evil spell on her!â
âEvil spell?â asked Maybelle in astonishment.
âThereâs only one way to break a witchâs spell!â shouted one of the men. âBurn her!â
The villagers took up the cry. âBurn them! Burn the witches!â
Chapter Thirteen
Out of the Blue
âEdna!â cried Maybelle. âDo something!â
âI canât do anything,â said Edna, and for the first time Maybelle heard fear in her voice. âI have no powers. You do something.â
âButâ¦â Maybelle took a deep breath. âOh, all right. Here goes nothing.â Lifting her wand, she waved it at the crowd and shouted, âZitzenspratz!â
Immediately, everything went dark.
Edna sighed. âFor heavenâs sake, Maybelle, turn on the lights.â
âSorry. Brechensprech!â
Lightning crackled all around them. Horrendous bursts of thunder shook the sky. The darkness remained.
âMaybelle,â said Edna quietly. âThatâs very exciting, but itâs not going to help. In fact it will probably make things worse.â
âI know, I know!â said Maybelle desperately. Waving her wand, she shouted, âCut!â
Instantly the thunder and lightning stopped. The light came back, and everyone could see again.
âOh, lordy!â cried Zozmagog. âI know what the problem is!â Snatching Ednaâs wand, he handed it to Maybelle. âHere,â he said. âUse this one!â
He was too late. Several of the men had raced forward and
