Eddie.â
Once again she flounced away, fully aware that I was watching. But I couldnât watch for long, because I had things to do. Frank was coming in, Jerry would probably be in tomorrow, and I had to find out if Danny had learned anything.
EIGHTEEN
A s I got out of the elevator on Frankâs floor I saw him come out of his suite and turn my way.
âFrankââ
âEddie, baby,â he said, spreading his arms expansively. The famous smile lit up his face. âCome on, we gotta go.â
âGo? Where?â
âI was just cominâ to find you,â he said. âWeâre goinâ to the Sahara.â
âFrank, if you wanna eatââ
âI do, but not here,â he said, hustling me down the hall. âYou got your Caddy?â
âYeah, butââ
âNever mind,â he said, as the elevator doors closed. âItâs stupid to drive your car to the Sahara. We could walk there.â
âYeah, but Frankââ
âI know, Iâll be recognized. But you can get us a limo, right?â
âWell, yeah, right, butââ
âThen letâs do it, pally!â he said. âWe can talk on the way.â
In the lobby I grabbed a valet named Tommy and told him I needed a limo fast.
âSure, Eddie,â he said. âCominâ up.â
âAre we running from somebody, Frank?â I asked.
âNo, no,â he said, ânothing like that. Did Eddie get in? Hey, thatâs right, heâs Eddie and so are you. And Eddie G.ââ
âHe and I went through that already,â I said. âYeah, heâs here and we got acquainted over lunch.â
âGood, good,â he said. âWhatâs the plan?â
âDinner tonight, the three of us,â I said. âSomewhere on the strip.â
âOK, good,â Frank said. âIâll let you set it up.â
âOnly not the Sahara, if weâre going there now.â
âRight, right, not the Sahara. Man, I need a drink.â
âWhatâs going on, Frank?â
âNothinâ, nothinâ,â he said. âTake it easy. All is well.â
I knew Frank had his manic moments â probably more so since last year, when Frank Jr had been kidnapped and JFK killed â but since I wasnât a doctor I didnât know if this was an example of a high, or if it was actually a low.
âCarâs out front, Eddie,â the valet said.
âThanks, Tommy.â
âLetâs go, kid,â Frank said.
He hurried across the lobby with me running after him â¦
When we got to the Sahara we were let off in the back, in front of the restaurant. There was a well-cared for lawn there ringed by over 200 motel rooms.
We went in and were immediately shown to Frankâs table, which was always held for him.
Once we were seated, Frank ordered a martini, and I had a beer. After he sipped the drink he seemed to settle down a bit.
âWhatâs goinâ on, Frank?â I asked again.
âNothinâ, Eddie,â he said. âIâve been on edge a little lately, thatâs all.â
âYou want something to eat?â
âMaybe an appetizer,â he said, ânothing much. Weâre gonna have dinner with Eddie.â He waved to the waiter and ordered an antipasto.
Then he sat back and took a deep breath before lighting a cigarette and taking another sip of his martini. Suddenly, he seemed calm.
âSo whatâs goinâ on with you?â
I told Frank about my lunch with Robinson.
âI like him,â I ended with. âHe seems like a cool old guy.â
âHeâs a legend in this business, Eddie,â Frank said. âIâm proud that I got to do two movies with him, especially
Hole in the Head
. That was some experience.â
Our antipasto came and we began to pick at it, after ordering two more drinks.
