beinâ out of your pit?â Frank asked.
âJackâs thinkinâ about creating a new job for me,â I said. âCasino host or somethinâ like that. Leave me free to do stuff for people.â
âWhat do you think of that?â
âI like beinâ in the pit,â I said. âWe have to talk about it, after â¦â
âAfter what?â Frank asked. âSomethinâ else goinâ on? Come on, kid, spill. Tell your Uncle Frank everything.â
So I did â¦
By the time I was done, so was the antipasto. Frank had a third martini, but I nursed my second beer along.
âSo, the cops are sayinâ she killed herself, but you and Jack donât believe it.â
âJack doesnât want to,â I said. âI just donât see how she couldâve.â
âBecause of the sink and the key.â
âRight.â
âSounds like you know what youâre doinâ, Eddie,â Frank said. âYou gonna be able to work on that while youâre dealinâ with Eddie? Or should we get somebody else to show him the ropes?â
âNo, no,â I said, âI wanna do that, Frank. Iâve already got Danny looking around at Helenâs apartment, asking some questions of her neighbors.â
âAnd what about bringinâ Jerry in?â
I smiled and said, âThe big guyâs on his way. Heâs gettinâ the first available flight.â
âIâll foot the bills, Eddie G.â
âYou donât have toââ
âListen,â he said, âyouâre doinâ a lot, for me, for Eddie, and for Jack. Itâs the least I can do.â
âOK,â I said. âI wonât argue with you.â
He checked his watch, then downed the last of his martini.
âI gotta get back and sleep off these martinis,â he said. âYou set up dinner tonight with Eddie, anywhere you want, and let me know.â
âOK.â
âHowâd you leave it with him?â
âThat weâd pick him up from his suite.â
âWhat floorâs he on?â
âTwo below you.â
âOK.â We stood up. âYou go out and get the limo and Iâll settle up.â
There wasnât much to getting the limo, but I got the feeling Frank didnât want me to see him settle up. I went outside, found the driver leaning against the car.
âWhere to, Eddie?â
I looked at him. More and more lately it seemed that people knew me, even when I didnât know them. Or maybe I just didnât remember.
âWhatâs your name?â
âLou.â
âWeâre headinâ back to the Sands, Lou, as soon as Frank comes out.â
âRight. Should I open the door for him?â
âNaw, just get behind the wheel. Iâll get the door.
âRight, boss.â
As Lou slid behind the wheel, Frank came out and I opened the door for him. He slid into the back, I got in next to him and slammed the door.
âHome, Lou.â
NINETEEN
O n the way back to the Sands, Frank got quiet. Not depressed again, just quiet. When we got out of the car in front of the hotel he said, âIâm gonna go see Jack. Pick me up at my suite for dinner, and then weâll get Eddie. OK, pally?â
âOK.â
Inside we split up. He went to see Jack, I went to my car. Driving to my house I tried to compartmentalize my thoughts, my tasks. I had to take care of Edward G. Robinson and help him with his research for
The Cincinnati Kid
; and I had to find out if Helen had killed herself or not. If not, did Jack also expect me to find her killer? And then, of course, there was Howard Hughes.
When I got home I showered and was picking out a suit for dinner when the phone rang.
âEddie?â
âYeah, Danny? Whatâs up?â
âI found something,â Danny said. âWe need to talk.â
âWhen?â
âNow.â
âIâm getting
