centimetres in her stilettos and weighs close to 100 kilos. Wrapped in flowing draperiesââRubensesqueâ is how she describes herselfâ that description about does it. She has black hair, pale skin and heavy, handsome features all owing a great deal to art.
âCliff, darling,â she said as we embraced. âIâve longed for this day.â
âCome off it, Rube.â I slapped her ample rump. âThis is a business call.â
She laughed. âWhat else, you old bastard. There was a time when I thought you might take off your trench coat and have a little fun.â
âIâve never worn a trench coat in my life, and just now Iâm having all the fun I need, thanks very much.â
âAmateurs,â she said as she subsided into a chair. âOkay, waste some of my time.â
I sat and felt the soft padding ooze around me. I could almost sense the many gentlemenâs trousers that had been draped over the chair.
âIâm looking for a working girl, Rube, but my last piece of information goes back over twenty years.â
While sheâs no saint and has played very rough in her time, Ruby has genuine concern for the people she employs and others in the sex business. She shook her head sadly.
âNot many survive that long, mate.â
âI know itâs a long shot. This womanâs name was Pixie Padrone. I thought youââ Ruby sat bolt upright, her upholstered breasts heaving.
âPixie, that bitch!â
âYou know her?â
âI should. She was on the street like you say, a real lowlife. Asked me for a spot but she was a hopeless junkie and sheâd had more claps than a symphony orchestra. Then all of a sudden sheâs cleaned up her act. Sheâs off the shit and working out of a flash flat in Point Piper. She took away some of my business for a while and didnât she rub my nose in it.â
âWhen was this?â
âLike you say, at least twenty years ago.â
âI mean specifically.â
âShit, Cliff, itâs a long time ago.â
âIâm talking about 1983.â
She thought, then shook her head. âNo, mustâve been a year or so later. I was in Enzed for most of eighty-threeâ avoiding a couple of warrants. I put in a manager here.â
âYou didnât know her brother killed a doctor in Darlinghurst?â
âI mightâve heard something about it when I got back, but I didnât pay it much attention. There was a lot going on thereabouts, what with the AIDS thing hitting and all that.â
âWhen you say sheâd cleaned up her act, what dâyou mean exactly, Rube?â
âJesus, youâre really into exactly and specifically and precisely, arenât you?â
ââfraid so, itâs like that.â
âI mean that she mustâve gone to some detox place and got herself cleaned out. Takes time and money, that. Plus, sheâd had her teeth fixed, boob job, the works.â
âWhere is she now?â
âHavenât a clue. She took off somewhere with her pimp.
Funny, you saying her brother killed a doctor. Pixieâs bloke was supposed to be a doctor. Probably an abortionist.â
âWhat was his name?â
âCanât remember. Adolf, Borisâsomething German like.â

I pressed Ruby for more information about Pixie Padrone but sheâd run dry. According to her, Pixie vanished from the Sydney sex scene âsometime around when Australia won the Americaâs Cupâ, which was as close as she could pin it down.
âThat was a boom time, if you like,â she said. âI wish theyâd bung on stuff like that permanently.â
She said sheâd ask around about Pixie, but she didnât hold out much hope.
âShe must have had parents, family of some kind apart from her brother?â
âIf Pixie had parents,â Ruby said, âthey probably kicked
