things you wonât like aboard this ship.â
The Hardys exchanged glances. Then they stowed their gear and followed the crewman to the cargo hold.
âLook!â Joe whispered. He pointed to a pile of logs tied down at the far end of the hold. âTheyâre just like the ones we saw hoisted aboard the Black Parrot.â
âStart checking this stuff!â Evans yelled. âMake sure itâs all battened down!â
The boys did as they were told. Gradually, during the course of their inspection, they edged their way toward the pile of logs. Frank began to examine them closely.
âWhat are you doing?â Evans shouted in annoyance.
âChecking the cargo,â Frank answered.
âThen keep moving!â
âYou want us to do a good job, donât you?â Joe retorted.
âNone of your back talk!â Evans gave Joe a hard shove.
Frank stepped in and the crewman lashed out with his fists. The young detective grabbed his opponentâs left wrist, and with a lightning move, pinned the manâs arms behind his back.
âLet go of me!â Evans yelled.
âNot unless you calm down.â
âOkay! Okay!â
Frank released him. âNow I suppose youâre going to report us to the captain.â
Evans was embarrassed by having been overpowered. âNaw,â he growled. âIâll get even with you two later. Go to your quarters and wait for further orders.â
âThis should be a pleasant voyage with him around,â Joe said, shaking his head.
âWeâll just try to stay out of his way,â Frank replied. âTrouble is what we donât want.â
When they arrived at their quarters, Frank spotted a note on his bunk. He snatched it and a cold chill quivered down his spine as he read aloud:
â âGet off this ship before itâs too late! â â
CHAPTER X
Deck Watch
âWHO could have written this note?â Joe exclaimed.
âI donât get it!â Frank said. âIâm sure none of the crew knows who we are. Yet someoneâs trying to warn us.â
The shipâs engines started and the hull vibrated.
âWeâre getting underway,â Joe observed. âThat was a pretty quick repair job.â
Frank stuffed the note into his pocket. âToo late to worry about this now. Weâll have to take our chances.â
âYou kids!â came Evansâs voice. âGet up on deck and help haul in the lines!â
The Hardys hastened topside, where they saw the bow of the Yellow Parrot swerving away from the pier.
âCome on! Come on!â Evans barked. âGet working!â
Frank and Joe assisted the other crewmen. Soon the heavy lines were pulled aboard and stacked in neat coils.
The job was hardly finished when Evans began shouting orders again. âNow get below and report to the shipâs carpenter. Ask him to give you some paint. There are a few vents around here I want redone.â
âWe wonât have time to do any investigating with him around,â Joe said under his breath.
âWeâll have to be patient and hope for a break,â Frank replied.
The Hardys were kept busy painting. Later that day Joe was high on a ladder daubing the top of a door when his paint can slipped.
Splat! It hit the deck with a thud, spattering a gray mess in all directions.
What was worse, Rawlin walked past the spot at that very moment. He was decorated with gooey blobs.
Enraged, he looked up and shouted at Joe. âHey, you! Come here!â
Joe quickly climbed down the ladder. Frank, who had been working nearby, ran over to see what had happened.
âWhatâs the meaning of this?â Rawlin roared.
âIt was an accident,â Joe said.
The manâs face reddened. âI donât believe you! I think you saw me coming and dropped that can on purpose. Youâllâ!â
âNow wait a minute,â Frank
