too,â Corky said bitterly, slamming her locker door shut. âThatâs what I
should
have said to him.â
Chip put a comforting hand on her shoulder. âWeâll have to watch out for him,â he said quietly. âHe seems like a bad dude.â
They made their way back downstairs, where Chip picked up Corkyâs backpack. Then they went out of the building, into a blustery gray afternoon. âHeâs a bad dude,â Chip repeated.
How
bad? Corky wondered. Bad enough to do her harm?
Chapter 11
Two on a Grave
A fter dinner that night Corky went upstairs to Scanâs room, to play a Nintendo basketball game with him. The phone rang and interrupted them. âDonât answer it,â Sean ordered, his eyes on the screen, his fingers furiously pressing the controller.
âI have to answer it,â Corky said, setting her controller down and hurrying across the room. âWeâre the only ones home, remember?â
âWell, Iâm not going to pause it. Iâm going to keep playing,â Sean threatened. âYouâre going to lose.â
Corky hurried across the hall to her room and picked up the phone on her night table. It was Kimmy.
âOh, hi,â Corky said unenthusiastically. The Nintendo game had managed to push the frightening events of the afternoon from her mind. Hearing Kinimyâs voice brought them all flooding back to her.
âI just wondered how youâre feeling,â Kimmy said.
âOkay. I guess,â Corky answered. âI mean, I canât really explainââ
âNo need,â Kimmy said quickly.
âI really wanted to come back on the squad,â Corky said, nervously twisting the phone cord around her wrist. âBut the screamsââ
âDonât give up,â Kimmy told her.
âI donât know. Iââ
âDonât give up,â Kimmy repeated. âYou can do it, CorkyâI know you can. Come to practice tomorrow.â
Corky unwound the cord from her wrist, then twisted it around again. âI donât know. I donât think so.â
âGive it another try,â Kimmy urged. âCome after school tomorrow.â
âIâI canât,â Corky said, letting go of the phone cord and pressing her hand flat against the green and yellow patterned wallpaper. âI just remembered. I have to take a makeup exam tomorrow. In the science lab.â
âThen come on Friday. Thatâs our next practice,â Kimmy insisted. âDonât give up, Corky. Try one more time. We really want you back.â
Corky felt her throat tighten with emotion. Kimmy was going out of her way to be nice to her. âThanks, Kimmy,â she managed to utter. âMaybe Iâll come. I really donât know what to do. I just want things to be normal again. But every time I try, something happens andââ She just had to blurt it out. âItâs the evil, Kimmy. The evil spirit. Itâs back. It didnât disappear that night.â
âWhat? Corky, listenââ Kimmy sounded very concerned.
âNo. Listen to me,â Corky insisted, more shrilly than she had intended. âWhat do you think caused those awful, frightening screams in my head? The evil spirit did. It was
there,
Kimmy. It was right there in the gym with us!â
âCorky, what are you doing now?â Kimmy asked softly, calmly.
âNothing. Just playing with Sean ⦠putting off doing my homework. Trying not to think about anything,â Corky told her.
âWant to come over here? We could talk. You could tell me what youâve found out about the evil. We could try to make a plan,â Kimmy suggested.
âWell â¦â Corky couldnât decide.
âYou donât want to be alone in this,â Kimmy said. âIf the evil is back, all of us are in danger, Corky. Weâre
all
in this. Weâre all involved. We have to work together to
