there that night in the cemetery. I had to fight with Jennifer, with the evil that was inside her.â
âSure,
you
want to believe it,â Jon said angrily. He balled his fists at his sides as if preparing to attack her. âYou want to believe you killed an evil spirit
because you donât want to admit that you killed Jennifer!â
âNow, waitââ Corky started. She could feel the fear returning, feel her knees go weak, her temples start to pound. âWait a minute, Jon. Iâm not a murderer. Your sisterââ
âYou killed her,â Jon said, inches from her, leaning into her. âYou killed my sister. Then you made upthat ridiculous story. My sister wasnât evil, and she didnât deserve to die.
You
are evilâand Iâm going to prove it.â
âNo. Your s-sisterââ Corky stammered in protest. âThe spiritââ
He gripped both of her shoulders. âI told you,â he said angrily, âI donât believe in spirits. But you know what, Corky? Iâm going to be
your
evil spirit.â
âHuh? What do you mean?â
âIâm going to watch you. Iâm going to follow youâyou and your friendsâuntil I find out the
truth.
Until I can
prove
that you killed my sister!â
âWhatâs going on?â a voice called urgently from down the hall. Corky turned to see a large figure jogging toward them.
Jon released her shoulders and spun around to face the intruder.
âCorky, are you okay?â It was Chip.
âChip!â Corky called gratefully.
As Chip approached, Jon turned away from Corky and started off in the other direction. As Chip caught up to her, Jon disappeared around a corner.
Corky sank back against a locker, trying to catch her breath.
âWho
was
that? Are you okay?â Chip asked, his eyes focusing down the hall, watching to see if Jon returned.
Corky nodded. âYeah. Iâm okay, I guess.â
âBut who
was
that?â Chip demanded. âWhat did he want?â
Corky took a deep breath. She held on to Chipâs broad shoulder. He felt so solid, so safe. âHeâs Jenniferâs brother,â she told him. âJon Daly. Heâs the one whoâs been following me.â
Chip slapped his forehead with an open palm. âJon Daly. Of course. How could I forget him?â
Corky leaned against Chip as she asked him to walk her to her locker. Sheâd forgotten to take her jacket to the gym earlier. âWhat do you mean?â Corky asked. âYou know him?â
Chip shook his head. âNo. But I remember him. Heâs the guy who went ballistic at Jenniferâs funeral Rememberâthey practically had to hold him down?â
âItâs all a blur,â Corky admitted. She tugged at her locker door.
âHeâs a strange guy,â Chip said, shaking his head, glancing back down the hall. âHeâs messed up, I think. He was always in trouble. He even got kicked out of school.â
âHuh? He did?â Corky asked, holding Chipâs hand tightly.
âYeah. Four or five years ago when he was a senior. I donât remember the whole story. He got into some kind of troubleâbeat up a teacher, I think. Got suspended from Shadyside. Then his parents sent him away, to a military school.â
âWow.â Corky let out a long breath. Her hand trembled as she worked the combination to open her locker. âHe thinks I killed Jennifer.â
âDid he threaten you?â Chip asked, hovering over her as she picked up her jacket, which had fallen to the locker floor.
âKind of. He said heâs going to watch me,â she answered. âHe said heâs going to watch all of usâuntil he finds out the truth.â
âLots of luck,â Chip said dryly.
âHeâs really messed up about his sister. He doesnâtbelieve what happened. ButâbutâI lost a sister
