today,â said Margo. âMaybe theyâve just taken himââ
Nicki didnât wait for her to finish the sentence. She wheeled around and ran back to the nursesâ station. Margo hurried behind.
From around the corner came Newman.
Whatâs he doing here? Nickiâs mind was racing. âWhereâs Master Kahana?â
âI was just about to ask that myself,â said Newman.
âTheyâve taken him upstairs for tests,â replied a nurse. âBut itâs past visiting hours. Youâll all have to leave.â
Nicki let out a huge sigh of relief. âAre his guards with him?â
âYes, of course,â declared the nurse.
Nicki thanked her and then confronted the hotel manager.
âMr. Newman,â asked Nicki, âare you a friend of Mr. Kahanaâs?â
âMr. Kahana was a guest at my hotel.â
Your hotel? thought Nicki.
Newman directed his gaze squarely at Nicki. âNow I have a question for you. What are you doing here?â he asked. Before Nicki could answer, Margo jumped in.
âSheâs going to be taking lessons from him. When heâs better. Sheâs learning self-defense.â
I wish she hadnât said that , thought Nicki.
âOkay,â said the nurse, âeveryone must leave now.â
They all strolled toward the elevator. Newman got on, but Nicki stopped Margo before she could enter.
âWait, Margo,â she said, âI left my wallet in your locker!â
âLocker?â
The door shut on Newman.
âWhat are you talking about?â asked Margo.
âI want to speak to the nurse again.â
The girls headed back to the reception area.
âExcuse me,â said Nicki, âbut that man who just leftâMr. Newmanâdoes he come by here often? To ask about Mr. Kahana?â
âIâm sorry,â said the nurse. âI canât give out that kind of information.â She returned to her desk.
âShe canât, but I will,â whispered Margo as they walked away. âIâve seen him here quite a few times. And yes, heâs always inquiring about Mr. Kahanaâs condition.â
âI thought so,â said Nicki.
Chapter Fourteen
âMargo,â said Nicki, raising her voice so she could be heard over the music, âthis is Tâai Soong and his friend, Duncan MacDonald.â
âMac,â replied the engineering student. He smiled at Margo and, wasting no time, asked her to dance.
Tâai showed Nicki to their table. âYou look nice,â he said.
âI feel ridiculous,â she replied. âAnyway, Mac seems to be in a better mood tonight.â
âYeah, I guess. Still not the guy I grew up with though. Believe it or not, he used to be a lot of fun.â
âHeâs changed.â
âOh, for sure. Like todayâhe got rid of his cell phone. And when I asked him why, he said theyâre too easily tapped into.â Tâai rolled his eyes. âHe told me that with the right equipment, itâs possible to remotely activate the microphone, even when a call is not being made, to listen to nearby conversations.â
âI guess heâd know.â
âRight, but when I joked with him and asked him what he had to hide, he got furious.â Tâai shrugged. âItâs as if heâs lost his sense of humor.â
Mac and Margo appeared behind Tâai.
âWhoâs lost their sense of humor?â
âYou.â
âYouâre a jerk.â Mac took Margo by the arm, then turned to Nicki. âYour friend is a terrific dancer,â he said, leading her back to the floor.
âSee what I mean?â said Tâai. Then he looked at Nicki. âIâm sorry. Did you want to dance?â
âNot really. Itâs not my thing,â she replied. âYou donât have to sit here with me, though. Iâm happy to watch.â
âI donât feel like dancing
