either.â
âThinking about your uncle?â
âHe goes through my mind all the time. I put in another call to the Massachusetts state police today, but they canât tell me anything. Or wonât.â Tâai stood up. âI think Iâll get a soda. What can I get you?â
âSparkling water would be great, thanks.â
Nicki looked around while Tâai was gone. Circling the club, she scanned everyone on the dance floor and at the tables.
She watched as Mac and Margo moved across the floor. Dancing and talking, they were oblivious to the fact that they were being watched. And not only by Nicki.
Just outside the washrooms, two young men in black leather never took their eyes off Mac. And across from them, in an alcove near the fire exit, stood an older man, watching everything from behind dark sunglasses. He didnât remove them until Mac and Margo left the floor.
Peter Byron!
Nicki returned to the table.
âWhere were you?â asked Margo. âAnd why arenât you dancing?â She waved to some friends of hers across the aisle.
Tâai came back, carrying the drinks. He passed Nicki her water.
âArenât you going to ask Yin to dance?â Margo gave Tâai a nudge.
âI did.â He sat down. âAnyway, who wants to compete with you two?â
âWhere did Mac go?â Nicki asked.
âI donât know,â said Margo. âHe was here a minute ago.â
She twisted around and saw him talking with the disc jockey.
âJust a second,â she said, and headed there herself.
âTâai,â said Nicki, âI saw Byron.â
âReally?â
âIâm sure it was him.â
âWhy would he be hanging out here, I wonder.â
âI donât know, butââshe looked up and over Tâaiâs headââhere he comes.â
âMay I join you?â
âSure.â Tâai pushed out a chair with his foot.
âMac here?â asked Byron.
âYes,â said Nicki. But you already knew that .
âHeâs requesting a song,â said Tâai, pointing to Mac and Margo. âHere he comes now.â
âYou guys are no fun,â said Margo. âWho can resist this one?â she asked, while âI Will Surviveâ blasted across the club.
âYour selection, Mac?â asked Tâai caustically. Mac ignored him and swung past the table with Margo in tow.
Nicki followed Byronâs gaze to the washroom, and to the two guys in black leather. One of them, who appeared to be Chinese, pulled a cell phone out of his pocket and handed it to the other, a blond, who left the room to make a call.
âFriends of yours?â asked Nicki.
Byron didnât reply.
The blond returned, signaled the other guy, and the two bounced onto the dance floor and headed straight for Mac.
Byron jumped up.
âWhatâs going on?â asked Tâai.
The two guys grabbed Mac and dragged him to the fire exit door. Margo stood in horror as one of them pulled out a knife and forced Mac outside.
Nicki ran after them.
They threw Mac against the wall.
âCome on, Quon,â said Mac. âGive me another couple of days.â
âYour timeâs up, pal,â said Quon. âPay me now, or youâre history. Understand?â He punched Mac in the face. âYour turn, Phil,â he said with a smirk.
Phil held the knife under Macâs neck, then kneed him hard in the stomach. Mac fell to the ground. Quon picked him up and punched him again. âYouâre all out of options, MacDonald. Give me the money or weâll use the blade.â
âDonât even think about it.â Nicki deftly kicked the knife out of Philâs hand, then shoved it with her foot so it slid underneath a parked van. âLet him go.â
Quon laughed. âWhy should I?â
Before Nicki could reply, the fire exit door flew open and two bouncers muscled
