âIâve seen you in church. Do you recognize me from the choir?â
âTypically I arrive in time for the sermon, so I donât usually get to see the choir,â Chloe said. âBut if youâre a member of Freedom of Life, I guess a âPraise the Lordâ is in order.â
âYes it is,â Montana replied. âHeâs worthy.â
Estelle walked back into the parlor with five children in tow. She looked at Chloe with an unreadable expression. Montana tucked that reaction away into her memory.
âWell, hereâs the surprise,â Estelle said, as she took Montanaâs hand.
The child who was apparently the youngest looked at Montana with a confused look on her face. âShe is so not a pony.â
One of the identical twins said, âGrandmother never said it was a pony, you said it was a pony.â
âWell, what is it exactly?â the other twin asked.
âShe, not it, is your new nanny,â Estelle beamed. âHow would you like the children to address you, dear?â
âUh, I guess Ms. Montana will be fine.â
The oldest girl burst into laughter. âAre you serious? You really went out and got a nanny. This is un-freaking-believable.â
âDeirdre! Manners, please. Ms. Montana is going to think you were raised by a pack of wolves,â Estelle snapped.
âOh, Iâm sorry, Grandmother,â Deirdre snapped back. âHow do you do?â
Deirdre did an elaborate curtsy that made her younger sisters laugh out loud. Montana bit her bottom lip to contain her own giggle. This one would be a challenge, Montana was sure about that.
The only boy said, âYou stay clowning. Hello, Ms. Montana, Iâm Reese. Iâm sure we wonât have too much contact, since Iâm hardly ever here, but welcome.â
âThank you.â Montana beamed in his direction. âAnd you might just need me every now and then. Are you a senior?â
He nodded. âYep. Almost grown.â
âAlmost,â Montana said. âDo you take calculus?â
Reese frowned. âYes. That class is whipping my butt.â
âWho was in the math club in high school?â Montana raised her hand. âOh, that would be me.â
âWell, then, Ms. Montana, we might be best friends. But youâre not my nanny.â
âNo, no. Youâre almost grown. You absolutely donât need a nanny.â
Deirdre rolled her eyes at Montana. âAnd neither do I.â
âBut Iâd love to be your friend too,â Montana said.
Deirdre scoffed. âFriends arenât on the payroll.â
Deirdre turned and ran out of the room before anyone could stop her. Montana bit her lip again. Deirdre was going to be more than a challenge. She was going to be a prayer request.
âIâm sorry,â Quentin said. âSheâs angry with me and taking it out on everyone.â
âNo need to apologize. Sheâll do it later,â Montana said.
Chloe chuckled, and Estelle cut her eyes at Chloe, immediately shutting that down. Quentin wasnât lying about who was in charge.
âSo what are your names?â Montana asked the twins, and the youngest. âIâve got Deirdre and Reese.â
âWeâre Madison and Morgan,â Madison said. Morgan nodded. Montana decided that Madison was the mouthpiece of the two girls.
âIâm Danielle, and I like you already,â Danielle said.
Montana gave the youngest child a hug and spun her in a circle on her roller skates. âI remember you from Vacation Bible School. Do you know I love roller skating too? I have my own pair.â
Danielle hugged her back. âOkay, you are better than a pony. Can we keep her?â
Quentin said, âYes, weâre keeping her. Isnât that right, Montana?â
âYes, this is going to be fun,â Montana replied.
âBut temporary,â Chloe said.
Estelle said, âI will determine
