man has hurt her so far?â
Miss Crowe nodded. âAbsolutely I do. But Gabrielle is a grown woman. Sheâs able to make her own decisions. All we can do is keep our eyes and ears open. And if we need to step in to protect her, we just have to pray we can and do and that sheâll have the right mind to listen. But heâs her father.â
âYeah. And I know how important a father can be in a little girlâs life.â
âPrecisely. And it doesnât matter how old a daughter is. Sheâll always be a little girl looking for love and attention from her father if he appears to be trying to give it, sincere or not.â
âWell, you met him,â Zachary said. âDo you think heâs a threat to her?â
âI donât know. All I know is even though heâs like a stranger about to dwell among usâall of us really, because you know Iâm not going too far from Gabrielle, not at this pointâheâs still her father in need of a place to stay.â
âThank you, Auntie. Because weâre too close to becoming husband and wife now for someone like him to come in and mess everything up,â Zachary said with a harsh edge to his voice.
Miss Crowe nodded. âI know, Zach. And you know Iâve been doing what I can when it comes to working on your mother. But sheâs still bound and determined that youâre not going to marry Gabrielle.â
âWell, my mother is not going to stop us. But Gabrielleâs fatherââ
âBenjamin Booker,â Miss Crowe said. âBut he says everyone calls him Bennie.â
âWell, Benjamin âBennieâ Booker, whatever his name, is not going to get in the way of our happiness, either. Iâll respect him as long as heâs on the up and up,â Zachary said. âBut the first sign that heâs up to no goodââ
âZachary,â Gabrielle said, almost sprinting across the room toward him.
He hugged her tight. âI hope you donât mind,â Zachary said. âBut I just felt like coming over for dinner and eating with my family.â
âHow coincidental,â Gabrielle said, looking at Miss Crowe with a sly grin. âYou just happened to show up right after my father arrived. Isnât that something?â
Miss Crowe turned away from Gabrielleâs stare.
âAre you all right?â Zachary asked, gathering her up by the shoulders as he looked into her beautiful brown eyes. At thirty years of age, the good doctor knew when he should be on high alert.
âIâm good,â Gabrielle said with a smile. âI would have liked to have been forewarned about my father coming today. But whatâs done is done. Weâre moving on from the hand weâve both been dealt.â
âThe table is set and the food is probably cold,â Jasmine said, strolling into the den. âIâve never had so much trouble getting people to do right in my life.â She was being completely and purposely overdramatic.
âComing right now,â Gabrielle said, raising her index finger in the air. âAnd if we have to microwave our plates to reheat our food, then thatâs what weâll have to do.â
Zachary was the last one to step out of the den. He and Bennie, almost having bumped into each other, were now face to face.
âHello,â Bennie said. âMy name isââ
âMr. Booker,â Zachary said. âPleased to meet you. My name is Zachary Morgan. Iâm Gabrielleâs fiancé. Please forgive me for not shaking your hand, but since weâre about to sit down and eat, Iâm sure you wouldnât want to contaminate your clean hand by shaking mine.â Zachary smiled.
âItâs okay. Iâm sure whatever germs are there wonât kill either me or you,â Bennie said, holding out his hand to Zachary.
Zachary looked down at his hand, then at Gabrielle. He took Bennieâs
